Economy/recession

I live in the uk and what follows are a few facts that I would like to know about the American economy to compare to ours in England.

1. Petrol/gasoline costs £1.22 per litre ( $2.40ish) up by 33% since January.

2. Electricity costs 25% more since January

3. My house is worth 9% less than in January

4.Loaf of bread is 50% more than in January

Is it as bad In America, and is it really because of the dodgy sub-prime market that we are all suffering? Please post some figures for comparison, always good to get 'real' facts rather than rely on the news.

Answering this thread actually makes me feel a bit better. We have to look at a couple of historical factors however for perspective.

Petrol (lol i love that ) has always been more expensive in Europe than here in the States. That being said 1 gallon is 3.8 litres, so you are paying 4.65 BP / gal approx $9.70 US, I pay $4.09/ gal. I have further crunched some number from a link I found. I saved this and imported it into excel to get my numbers.Weekly Retail PrPemium Motor Gasoline Prices (Including Taxes)

From 1996 - 2003, the average price of a gallon of gas was $1.76. Same time frame UK $4.78 (in USD), Germany $4.71. From Jan - Dec 2004. Avg price : US $2.04, UK 5.55, Ger 5.34.
2005: US 2.43, UK 5.86, GER 5.50.
2006: US 2.87, UK 6.54, GER 6.24
2007: US 3.16, UK 7.41, GER 7.19
2008: US 4.00, UK 8.45, GER 8.71 (#'s through July 7)

So, just a rough analysis, US has almost doubled in price, and you folks on the other side of the pond are just getting raped for a gallon of gas. I couldn't imagine. It would cost me $225 to fill up my truck over there.

Anyway Woo, I gotta go jump in that truck and burn some of this precious fuel. Will check back later to compare the others.:joint::peace:

Gas, beer, food all crazy up in US. People aren't doomed wandering in the streets, but everything feels 'tighter'. The government inflation numbers are complete bullshit.

We've got 2.5B Chinese/Indians that like our lifestyle, and that drives prices. I'm not a doom kind of guy, but all Westerners had it easy for the last 60 years. Despite rhetoric, local/state/federal g'ment tacking more and more in taxes in form or another.

I need a bong hit.

if you're complaining about the price of ________, you're behind the times. other people are well invested in commodities and oil, their profits offset their increased expenses.

Are we, the people, meant to be slaves?

We have alternative fuels. The main reason behind the recessions is the cost of gas! I believe the oil companies must own part of the world, because this is bullshit! We should all be running our cars off of hydrogen!

The technology is here, but the rich people all have good money in oil! Oil is an investment for them. If they can't sell us oil, than they are out of business.

The cost of transportation is a scam because of our gov't.. They aren't letting us have the cheaper AND cleaner technology because they won't make as much money on it because we could produce it from our own homes!

What is wrong with this world? Why must oil be the opium for the masses? Its because the elites have a lot of money STILL to be made off of oil. They don't want us to have cheaper alternatives.
