I'm in between New York and South Carolina. When I worked in SC, people there said I talked like a Yankee. Friends I hung w/ in NYC constantly ribbed my [to them] southern drawl.
What I've found - south, east, and north - and anywhere else: a$$holes are universally disliked, regardless of region, and no area has a monopoly over the other.

People are nice here but shit wears on them too. I can see they're fed up with that polite southern reputation. They're still polite but with a shorter fuse. Upstate? I'm from SC and would check out the prep white boys around Greenville/Spartanburg areas. Theyre a bit pricey but it'll be good, will probably deliver and you avoid the dreaded "wrong color in the wrong neighborhood" scenario. I know for a fact that cops look for this in SC. If you're in NC then Asheville could be gold but you really need to watch for the narcs there. Near Clemson, SC? Then you're golden! Just get out on a gameday and look for the ones that are blistered but not drinking. If you're near Rock Hill then you're in prime real estate. It'll just take meeting a smoker.
