A gram per watt is a reasonable estimation. That has some limitations. Obviously you can't put a single plant in a 4x4 tent and get that. Nor overload plants with 200w/sq ft of light intensity and get 1g/w. There's a point of diminishing return.
But, under normal circumstances, and about 60w/sq ft of HID, you should be able to get about 1g/w and 40g/sq ft.
