The number of beneficiaries of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), otherwise known as food stamps, has exceeded 45 million for 48 straight months, according to data released by the Department of Agriculture (USDA).

In April 2015, the latest month from which data is available, there were 45,438,832 beneficiaries of the food stamp program.

The number of food stamp recipients first exceeded 45 million in May 2011. Since then, the number has consistently exceeded 45 million, hitting a record high of about 47,800,000 in December 2012.

In April 2015, households on food stamps received an average benefit of $256.93, and total benefits for the month cost taxpayers $5.7 billion.

The USDA has been tracking data on SNAP participation since fiscal year 1969, at which time average participation stood at about 2,800,000. Average participation in fiscal year 2014 hit about 46,500,000, meaning that since 1969 participation in the program has increased 16-fold.

What, so if you have more kids, you don't think you should receive more food stamps if you're in the same economic situation? 47% of SNAP recipients are kids, so you would be harming them if that wasn't there. SNAP eligibility is based on household family income, so if you make 130% of the poverty line or less, you qualify. 47 million Americans (14%) are receiving food stamps, what's that tell you about wages? That means 47 million Americans are making ≤ $14,300..

"SNAP expects families receiving benefits to spend 30 percent of their net income on food. Families with no net income receive the maximum benefit, which equals the cost of the Department of Agriculture's Thrifty Food Plan (a diet plan intended to provide adequate nutrition at a minimal cost). For all other households, the monthly SNAP benefit equals the maximum benefit for that household size minus the household's expected contribution.

Table 1 shows the maximum SNAP benefit levels in fiscal year 2015 for households of different sizes. Take as an example a family of three: if that family had no income, it would receive the maximum benefit of $511 per month; if it had $600 in net monthly income, it would receive the maximum benefit ($511) minus 30 percent of its net income (30 percent of $600 is $180), or $331. On average, SNAP households currently receive about $256 a month. The average SNAP benefit per person is about $125 per month, which works out to about $1.40 per person per meal."

Do you believe that's too much, $1.40 per meal?? Do you think someone spending $1.40 per meal is buying fucking caviar??

why don't farmers in idaho have fields full of barrels then? why do they plant into the ground instead?

how many acres would a family of four need to plant in order to feed themselves for an entire year?
Answer to questions 1 &2 = Economies of scale. Habit.

Answer to question 3 = Ask your mother.

i use my greenhouse to extend the growing season and do successive plantings.

your idea that poor people can magically homestead their way to nutrition is a pipe dream.
You are correct they'd need your nanny state to step aside wouldn't they?

How DID people ever survive prior to the wasteful "war on poverty"?

No. I laugh at you for many reasons, not for your peeling paint, but lately for your inane "weed should be legal to grow but illegal to sell" idea.

I recognize when so many are laughing it is hard to keep it straight though, so I extend my sympathy.

Only people laughing at my idea are people who make money selling weed. The rest of us in illegal states just want to be able to grow our own stash

No. Your prohibitionist idea is ridiculous because it is a contradiction and expresses the thoughts of a control freak....you. Your defense of the idea has been pathetic and inconsistent. You've claimed that making something illegal to sell somehow doesn't make you a prohibitionist, which is absurd and contradictory.

Obviously by making something illegal, people would be punished / go to jail etc. You are defending putting people in jail for a consensual act and can't deny that.

Maybe you should man up and admit you didn't think through it very well, but somehow I think you will keep beating your head against the wall and saying it doesn't hurt.

Your reverence for government intervention is clear, you just want to be the one holding the gun that's all...Prohibitionist.

i make tons of money selling weed and i don't even laugh at your idea. it's a fine intermediate step.

but full on regulation and taxation is what the end goal has to be, even though that really really really puts me out of a job.

That's because you like prohibitionist type tactics too when they suit your wants for controlling others.

Are you good with Chesus idea that putting people in jail for engaging in peaceful free enterprise is okay?
