I got sick and tired of paying ransom money for a shit bag of weed, so after my last visit to the local medicine man I bitched all the way home in the car about how crappy the count was my wife threatened to divorce me if I didn't stop bitching and just grow my own stash, so I am.
I've done alot of researching And want to grow organic, I mixed my SS, bought me some beans along with some bag seed I have and got my grow room ready.
I've been reading up on what soil to use out of the gate after germinating I was going to use Fox Farm but the concencus was that FF was too hot for seedlings so now I'm thinking Coco-coir blend with just regular organic soil for the top half of my pot and SS on the bottom half with 1inch of decorative fish tank rocks on the bottom to help with drainage.
I have about 3 more weeks of letting my mix "cook" before I start my grow, I need some feedback on this issue pls.
I want to grow organic no liquid nutes for me, MJ grew in the outdoors for thousands of years, mother nature always does a great job.
Like my wife says I got something new to do now that I'm retired...so what the heck i love Jerba!

I think a peat (Promix) type grow that I started and continue with is a pretty great first grow method. No worries about soil hotness for one thing. Inexpensive (I just did an 8 plant grow for $22 not including electricity or equipment depreciation.). In any case, have fun with it. It is a nice feeling to smoke your jar's last bud only to get up and grab another jar.

Thanks for the reply, so let me get this straight. So youre saying i should do the top layer with promix? Or forego the supersoil?

Fox Farm! Screw peat if you are a new grower. Buy a bag of good soil and use it. Don't make your first attempts expensive and frustrating.

I see far more frustration out of soil growers than anyone here and peat has to be the least expensive medium, I would think.

What kind of lights you gonna use? how big is your grow space and how many plants do you plan on having? the best thing you can do is to " KEEP IT SIMPLE! " as for soil I use bagged compost I start my seeds in the 16 oz party cups with holes cut in the bottom, let them grow ~ 2-3 weeks then ~3days before transplant I stop watering so the soil dries out some then put into it's final pot = less stress in the long run.

I plan on using 8-6500 k , 4-2700 k CFL lights, closet is 3.5x4x9 (flat white), 2-4 plants ( not sure yet). Have Supersoil cooking in my back yard for 3 weeks, my only question is that i was reading that Fox farm was too hot for seedlings so i wanted to know what top soil should i use with my supersoil base, i will not be transplanting, using a 4 gallon pot.

4gl pots might be a tad bit small, they will work, but I would go with at least 7gl pots, 10 would be even better.
The CFL's are a good start but if you could do a 400watt hid lamp, I think you would be happier with your results...don't forget to use fans to keep the air moving ...don't blast the plants, a good flutter is what your after.

I also grow in supersoil and start my seedlings off in either happy frog, hf and OF 50/50 mix or roots organics. I love subs supersoil recipe. Easiest grows ive ever done.

Thank you hotshot, that is the answer I was looking for. I have both OF and HF, but after reading about how OF was too hot for seedlings I got leary about using it on seeds...I feel better now! Thanks!

i agree with @hotshotisdashit i use happy frog soil and you could use that and start now while the soil finishes cooking. it will be done in time for when you need to up-pot them for the first time. i'd suggest looking into a T5, for the money you spend on all those CFLs you could get a nice 2-foot 8-bulb T5 and not have to mess with the distance requirements that CFLs impose on the grower.

good luck on your grow @Blunted 4 lyfe - welcome to RIU

@hotshotisdashit if you decide to use happy frog and get started right away, i add EWC and a little dolomite lime to it first, and start my seedlings out in this
What i do is start in 16 oz dixie cups. For maybe teo weeks i veg in those until roots are established. I go straight from dixie cups to 7 gallon fabric pots. I use 1/3rd super soil and 2/3 rds base soil. I veg for 45-60 days before i flip. Around 3-4 weeks into flower i top dress with 1 gallon more of super soil. I do add dolomite lime to all my soil but earthworm castings only in my super soil.
