had to remove a cola, was this bud rot or other?

Outdoor sativa was super healthy through veg and first half of flower, started noticing heavily mottled older/lower fan leaves last couple weeks, then one cola had big sugar/fan leaves looking/bad dying. I've been plucking bad leaves for three weeks thought she had a P def, but over the weekend I shook each stalk and top of one cola essentially fell off.

Closer inspection found mushy brown stem right there and two other spots where buds on that cola and branch underneath were mushy brown. Closer inspection showed unhealthy burnt looking brown stems at internodes. it was raining and I made a decision to remove the cola. It looked unhealthy with messed up fan leaves and those mush spots.

was it bud rot or possibly root related? the rest of her looks healthy. I feel removing the bad cola was a good decision she looks good. Hopefully the rains have ended and she gets at least a week of sun

Bud rot, or bud blight...aka Botrytis has afflicted your plants.
Assuming that your plant is in the ground, not a a container (so you cannot move it indoors overnight), then the only thing that you can do is to is to inspect all of your buds for any sign of bud rot.
Gently pull the big leaves growing out of your buds...if they come right out with minimal resistance, the inside of the bud is rotted!
When you find a diseased bud, use some sterilized scissors to cut and remove all rotten bud parts. Then spray the area that you cut up with a hydrogen peroxide solution.
You need to do this every day 'till harvest. Major pain in the ass.

You are right, it can be like spittin' in the wind...sometimes nothing smokeable can be salvaged.
But sometimes you can slow it down enough to save some buds...

I have did it myself, but man you have to be on top of things, being vigilant and making sure you aren't spreading spores. In my experience if you are in the middle of flower, give it a go, but if I'm within two weeks of harvest and have capitulated trichomes, I have found you are better to cut your losses.

all clear trics at the moment and she smells immature. The area can get some great sunny weather in October, I have to see what I can salvage. I'll be inspecting buds much closer next time, fooled me this time thinking it was PH or P def, heartbroken when that cola top came off. Learning.

Bud rot only gets worse and worse every year. You'll need to find a new spot to grow or your gonna get the same problem next year. Sorry to hear this.

I suggest like mentioned above go through with a fine tooth comb checking each cola doing the leaf pull test which will help let you know if there's any more bad areas The shorty part is even pulling the leafs to check will only let you know if it's completely rotted out. It could still be inside even if the leaf doesn't pull out ......if your guna try to let her go inspect and remove and of the bad area ,,,remove some of the good bud around the bad spots to IMO though I'd take that plant ASAP it's a bad deal all the way around. Bud-rot can the the most heart breaking of all of the potential problems attacking a bountiful harvest of bodacious buds!
This is why I always keep some of my outdoor plants in containers, which I can move indoors with a dehumidifier and hopefully thereby avoid severe bud-rot.
Plants in the ground outdoors can be ruined in just a few days, I mean the entire plant can be laid to waste by bud-blight.
The only thing that I have found that can slow it down (besides better weather) is constant inspections and cutting and spraying...and as mentioned above, this might simply only slow it down a bit.
Some strains are much more susceptible to bud-rot than others.
I have lost entire five to ten plant runs of some strains which just could not handle the late season conditions, e.g., I will never ever attempt to grow AK-47 outdoors in the NE US ever again...the climate conditions ruined every single plant.

good chance for sunny days this week, I'm taking a systemic approach to salvage what I can, any part needs at least another week. Meanwhile, her indoor sisters are dried and finding their way in jars tonight. Wow this stuff is golden.. so sticky and potent. I've smoked early buds, but a half flower of this made me lose the ability to focus for like, two minutes

I went through and found three more flowers that had early bud rot, carefully removed them. I used hydrogen peroxide solution for spray and light root drench, hopefully she'll respond well, plenty of healthy buds. Looks dry and mostly sunny the next 7-10 days. Here's to finishing frosty, fingers crossed..

Plants are constantly transpiring moisture from inside. The thicker & fatter the buds grow, the harder it is for the moisture to find it's way out. Strain selection & early detection are your best defense. Good luck

i have seen the faster strains rot worse at times. some of the best anti mold strains have been long flowering for me. wind dewpoint
