Defoliation Increases Marijuana Yields????

Of course us newbies read way too much, almost like information overload. I went through quite a bit on the site, but have not run across a discussion about defoliation. Lots here have said in some posts, not to remove leaves, which makes sense, but other site have said its ok or even here it is said its ok at certain times. My question is, has anyone done anything like this and if so, what was the outcome?

Theres a fine line where too much hurts yields, and if you do it at the wrong time it hurts yields too....and if you take the wrong leaves it also hurts yields. This thread just so you know, will probably hit fifty pages in a week because this is one of the biggest arguments in growing. Have fun

Thanks Alienwidow, not trying to start anything here, just curious if anyone did it and what the results may have been... I am a long time gardener ( vegetables not that cannabis cant be considered a vegetable too,lol), and smoked this stuff probably long before many here were even a glimmer in mom and dads eye. I just happened to start growing by total accident this summer outdoors and got hooked, now moving things indoors and trying to gather as much knowledge as possible in a short time frame, as I am hooked on growing at the moment. The kicker is, I dont smoke... at least not yet... been over 27 years since I had a toke... ... But still want to grow that one plant in a small space that brings in 4,5, or 6 ozs dry in a small closet grow...

I think you can hit a bigger yield. like ailenwidow said its if you do it at the right time. I have found around week 4 almost 5 is a good time.

I take off some of the fan leaves to get better light penetration to the lower part of the plant. I probably could take off more but I'm still experimenting as well.

Thanks MrStickyScissors... is that week 4 to 5 in veg or flower or both? And dont you just gotta smile when the scissors get so sticky they dont want to open....

I think the next round I will experiment too. I have 4 clones going now, but really only room for 3, so maybe if I experiment on 2 I could fit all 4...

But for me at least when they are in full flower and done stretching and have built nice tops that have filled in around week 4 or 5 I pull off some of the fan leaves to get more light to the lowers. Seems like it is working. especially if you have any leaves that are damaged. just best to take them off and get light to fully functioning leaves

Key is just too use your brain and not take to much off. if you don't take enough off the worst that could happen is nothing. if you take to much the worst that can happen is you could fuck your yield off

Makes perfect sense to me, I will do that with the two I have when I get them into flower....

Your fan leaves are like solar panels. Your plant needs them. I remove lower fans and bud sites so the plant can focus it's energy where it matters the most...

Is that like lollipopping? I have done a little of this, need to do more, thats how I got my 4 clones for the next round.

So i grew this plant here, and sure, it looks big, but everything on the inside of the plant was total larf. Not even big enough to keep. The outside ends were pretty good and she yielded quite a bit. But next time i try and grow the same strain outside i will be taking the inside and removing it. I am not dealing with that larf, and trimming, for nothing.

I don't do it to the extreme of calling it lollipopping...but I remove whatever isn't going to get enough light penetration to be worthwhile. The thing with removing your upper fans is that's how your plant gets its energy...your doing yourself a terrible injustice removing upper fan leaves

No bro you don't want to take leafs off that late.

Like mongo says. You dont want to remove leaves in flower. Most guys will trim before they go into flower, then sometimes lightly after about one-two weeks of flower. Or some guys just do it all at around week one-two of flower. Then STOP. And not too much. Seriously, dont over do it or youll destroy your yield.

He was probably running a huge yielding strain and he would have gotten more in total if he was less aggressive with it.

a friend told me he takes no more than 30%
