They knew the risk when they invested in his business venture. If the money was guranteed it wouldn't be lucrative to invest in people even if they have a track record of being better than most in business. Losing and going bankrupt and "screwed over" creditors is part of why you make money giving it to someone when successful.
Investing is just gambling nicely reworded and with better odds, but you can still lose your ass just the same.
