when is the right time to transplant?

Hi there, quick question, how can you really tell its time to repot.

My girl is a hair taller than her 1 gallon pot and the leaves go over the edge... i FIMmed her 3 days ago, so was thinking to transplant to a 5 gallon the day after i water.

Any info would be appreciated, she is also drooping a little today, not sure why.

Watering once every day or two is a good indication a bigger pot might be needed. Your probably watering once every 3-4 days now huh?

at the moment it seems to be every 4 days, but its been 3 and she seems dry, I'm gonna water her tomorrow to be sure and keep it at 4 days. I guess i will water tomorrow and then see if she dries out quicker.

How old is she? What medium is she in? Do you see roots in the holes on the bottom? Also, how tall do you want her to get by finishing time?

she is about 2 weeks out of seedling, just under a month from germinating the seed, she is in a mix of soil i found here in nicaragua, organic compost fertilizer and some fine lava rock.

Being in a third world country people look at me funny when i ask for perlite.

I see some roots that have peeked out the bottom, but i have a little base of lava rock at the bottom of the pot too.

I don't need her to be huge, its my first run and these are bag seed so if she is a foot at the flip ill be happy, maybe foot and a bit i dunno really.

i have read that article, but i have a hard time figuring out the right time through it, i understand the general knowledge behind transplanting why and how, but i feel even that article doesn't elaborate enough on the WHEN.

Well, I don't know if anyone on Ebay will ship perlite or anything else to Nicaragua but, you may be able to get perlite that way. Looks and sounds like she can transplant now. I asked about finishing height because in general, a plant will grow a foot for each gallon of medium used. So, If you use 5 gallons and have a decent lighting source, she should finish at about 5 feet in height. If you want and able to grow her taller, more medium and more light are the ticket. If you are space limited you should consider pot and growth size.

Ok thanks for that, makes sense, so she is in a 6" pot right now, and i will want to pot her into a 1 gallon and i think that would be the final one for me, just looking to do it right you know.

As for perlite, i can always try but this country only recently starting getting anything at all, easily 30 years behind the USA. I may be able to get some wood chips or something like that but definitely not perlite.

The general consensus here and on most forums is to transplant when roots are seen in the drainage holes. This is what I and overwhelming numbers of others do. Personally I only do 1 transplant per plant. Transplant can shock and reduce quality and quantity of final harvest.

The best thing you can do for your grow is to read, study, and learn all you can about proper cultivation. It is ok to ask questions of others here. But, keep in mind that ultimately only you can control what happens in your garden. So, don't be hasty and go with others opinions. There are a good amount of knowledgeable and helpful folks here. But also a lot of know it all's who have done 1 or 2 grows and now think they know everything about everyone's grow. So, be careful and always get multiple opinions. I go by the if 7 out of 10 people give equal answers the info MAY BE good rule. Always best too find your own answers though. There are TONS of websites dedicated to cannabis cultivation.

Hey, I've been to Nicaragua and I loved it !

About your roots and all the questioning on them, why don't you just pop the plant out of the pot and take a peek? I always do this at least once before transplanting. It also allows me to closely examine the roots.

It's easier done when the medium has dried (just before watering). I squeeze the sides of the pot to release it from the root/medium "cake", flip the whole plant on its side or completely upside down, and gently pull the pot away while also pulling on the stem.

It may sound like a delicate and risky procedure, but in practice, it's really not. You won't damage the root mass unless you leave the plant like this for an extended period of time (also don't expose roots to direct sunlight...). The worst that can happen is to create a huge mess. I eventually got better at it :roll:
