The worm bin is practically ready to harvest. I'm estimating about 2 cubic feet per bin. It's just taking forever getting the worms to travel up to the next tier bin. Only about half of the worms have made the journey.
My worms get fed a variety of veggie and fruit scraps - romaine lettuce, apples, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, mangos, avocados, and coffee grounds, oats & grains, and pulverized crab shell meal and egg shells, rock dusts, coco coir, cardboard, peat moss, shredded dried canna leaves, other plant materials like basil, lavender, comfrey leaves, nettle leaves, and dandelions.

are you just using fetida or have you added hortensis to the bin?

Just foetida. Every time they're done for the most part. I just add another level of bedding and worm food. Since the red wigglers only hang out near the surface.

I'm loving the idea of "set it forget it" with SIPS. The soil almost acts as a time buffer for a low reservoir (DWC dead dead dead). One could even go so far to implement a reserve reservoir with automated watering to replenish the buckets, leaving one more time between maintenance.

I have living soil in my sips. Which is a mix of peat moss, pumice, vermicompost, crab shell meal, kelp meal, ahimsa neem cake, fish bone meal, oyster shell flour, and basalt rock dust. . My vermicompost is rich in nutrients too. In my last post I said what I feed the worms.

You could implement a self watering system to add water to the resi's. But that's just more things to go wrong.
Lines crack, break, clog. The worst if they get disconnected and cause a flood. Back in my hydro days I had that happen several times. It's no fun at all cleaning up a flood. Hoping it didn't cause any damage.
Everyone that's run blumats had had floods as well.
I'd rather manually add water to each resi.

That is some amazing soil you build. That's not on my radar, so I'll need to find what works in my world -- but it does let me know what is possible. Thanks for sharing that recipe, gives me something to aspire to.

i get it locally from a nursery.
check nurseries, landscape companies also build a soil and keep it simple organics carries pumice. it would be cheaper to find it locally.

I ask because I've used pumice for many many years & it's always expensive in retail outlets even here in cali
but i did find a new source , feed stores - they sell a product called 'Dry Stall'
used for horses to keep them from falling in their stalls & for wet floor traction in horse barns
around here it's about $9.oo a 40-lb bag
it's 100% pumice in a small form , which works well in my soil-less mix (coco based )
I started years ago using it in my Ebay succulent/cacti nursery business

SIPS... yet another new awesome thing for me to build in my garden. I'm wondering though, how often can you run the same soil in a SIPS setup? can the soil be no till and reused right away (being that you have the proper soil life) or do you have to trash the soil every time?

Build a soil carries the earth boxes too. They might be cheaper. I think there's a promo discount code for it too. I'll check when I get home.
