I am looking for input from people that have my similar setup. I have a 4' x 8'with 2 x 1k hoods and a 4 x 4 veg area with a 400w going. I want to pop a pack of beans in rotation to crop every 5-6 weeks utilizing 1 side of the flower tent at a time and staggering harvests. how often should I be poppin beans?

I'm not a perpetual grow guy but if it were legal were I live I would be doing just exactly this. Consider this: vegging plants are probably going to be quite a bit smaller than your flowering plants, so you may want to adjust the size to 4x5 and 4x3. Just a thought. If you've got both flowering and vegging plants you won't need to pop beans; you can take clones from your vegging plants a week or so before you chop and they will have roots when you harvest your flowering plants. Saves a lot of money on beans; gives you a head start on growth (take big clones from the bottom of the plant), and you can select the best plants to clone from to keep your gene pool at it's best.

Roger all that but I have ALOT of new gear from topdawg, rare dankness, archive, exotic genetix, and bohdi that I wanna cycle through. Clones will be taken and kept alive while pheno hunting all the new gear....thats why I was curious what people were doing seed wise with a perpetual.

Why start every crop from seed? The whole idea is to find one outstanding plant and propagate it with cuttings.Takes a while to figure out which is the best plant but then you have consistent harvests. 5-6 weeks would be long enough veg time probably. Maybe start the cuttings in small rooting chambers 2 weeks before the ones currently in veg go to the flowering section, so they get a total of 7-8 weeks. It's just a matter of taking cuttings from the ones currently in veg after they've been in there for 3 weeks.

I do something similar to what you're thinking here and run perpetual but I keep a separate space to bring up seedlings altogether and pop new seeds every 2 weeks. In that space I mix clones and seedlings up to 1gal pots until seedlings are sexed and clones are ready to veg. Then I throw the promising and sexed seedlings/clones into veg to fit my next round (going into veg they're up-potted into 3/5/or 7gal). Sometimes a new run going into flower contains seedlings, sometimes clones, sometimes a mix. I wish I could figure out an easy/better formula for the method but it always seems to work out if I put clones in every 3 weeks and seedlings every 2 weeks. I usually pop more seedlings than I'd be able to flower because between germ rates and just culling bad/slow growing phenos, PM susceptible phenos etc., it's rare that I'll end up with every seedling making it to veg. I think that's why it always works out though, besides a dedicated veg area to feed the flower room, I keep a separate cabinet for seedlings/clones.

I only ever use seeds to find a good pheno. I find the majority of seed plants are too light yielding to be worth the space. A lot of plants will have lower buds that are a bunch of tiny miniature calyxes which are useless fluff. But now and then I'll find a pheno that produces fat full sized calyxes even on very bottom buds. They'll be lighter weight than the uppers but they're not those little tiny useless resinless calyxes. And a plant like that also produces large heavy top buds. That's a good way to tell a high yielding pheno, how full sized the lower calyxes are.

Yeah that's more or less how I grow. I just constantly look for phenos ;) I've been doing a bunch of my own crosses and pheno hunting both females and males. Have one good producing JTR x Blueberry, but favouring another I have going right now for smell and taste. Not as big a producer but better quality smoke.

All very useful input yall! Thank you guys, I understand running cuttings which I will keep a pheno from each strain I run. I got Chem IX, Scotts og, corn bread, goji og, gth#1, cookies and cream, faceoff og bx, and rude boi og.

so the best time to make cuttings for clones when the plant is in veg? sorry for the noob question, as well, i'm a noob! thanks for the info.

Welcome to RIU.

Definitely take cuttings from veg plants only!!!!!

A~~~
You could take cuttings from a flowering plant for the first few week and reveg her.
That is a more advanced technique
I run a perpetual grow and 2 weeks before they go into flower I will cut clones. 2 weeks in the cloner transplant into 3 gal smart pot 4 weeks in veg and the cycle continues the trick is marking everything then you know how to weed stuff out later

Running split flower rooms is pretty much impossible if you have a day job. I understand why, because you only have so many amps available to the room but a ton of space. I have that problem too. But just to warn you it can be demanding you need even canopy tops for sure.

You need to get in front of the demands of the flowering room and actually seeds are the best thing right now. (This from the clone guy).. Seeds will pop when we need them to and you need to get rolling so it makes it easy, it's what I did, it's what your daddy did. So let's just make up some numbers and go through this.

4x4 = 4 plants of the type we want to flower and for this example they need approximately a 2 months veg. So that's 16 plants every two months.

1. Germinate/Plant 16 plants right now and scramble to get your room up. (First run will not be fully vegged when we flip, let's get some smoke going)
2. About a week before flip take cuttings from veg so we can learn cloning, clean up the bottoms stalks and wait 1 week. (No more than 1/5th of the entire foliage should be removed)
3. Germinate your next set of 16 seeds we will be flipping to flower in 1 week now. (Hope they all pop although not likely)
3. Flip the first 16 plants after a week now plant 16 more seeds. (We can't count on clones yet)
4. You will likely be less than 16 seeds germinated but also > 2 months in flower so it will kind of work out. But basically just repeat here.

Now we need to learn cloning we need to know how long does it take to get them rooted, how long before the roots take to soil and how long it will be before they are the size of a 2 month old veg plant. Clones root at different rates so I run 3 cloners to get 18 plants. When you learn cloning and become intimate with your flag ship strain you will have a flag ship strain that is the same every time. Genetic drift happens to other people not us so don't worry ;)

P.S.: I used 2 months as the example because that's what I use for my slow grower you may need less veg or more depending on whatever

Good luck with trying to run multiple genetics in your flower room at he same time.

I would personally suggest you flower one or two at a time.

Save your beans.
Or get a few moms growing of the 3rd and following genetics, while you flower the first two.

Makes it easier said to get your op running smoothly if you have everything running tight.
Plus, you can make sure you are comparing apples with apples when picking which you want to be using when you switch to perpetual.

Just my opinion buddy.
Good luck!

It is not recommended to take cuttings from a flowering plant!

Not sure why you think it's an "advanced technique", as the cloning process is identical.
It just takes longer to have your flowering clone revert back to vegetative state in full.

The patience required and most beginners do not have it or pinch off the flowers when cloning.

Hey Qball

What patience are you talking about?
Don't take clones from flowering plants and you won't need to be patient buddy.

Do you make a habit of taking clones from flowering plants and "pinching off the flowers"?
It is not recommended to take cuttings from a flowering plant!

Your giving advice that suggests taking a clone from a flowering plant as an "advanced technique".

Please don't try "help" anyone else on here with "advanced techniques"...........

As I said previously :

The patience it takes revegging a flowering plant. Thats not talking about cloning a plant in flower
When revegging a plant it can stall for a few weeks you can get a hermes or other issues
The comment about pinching off the flowers when cloning them was a reference to a few threads on riu in the last week that is exactly what they were doing.
Where in the post do you see me say THIS IS HOW I DO IT you do not you are making assumptions.
Taking clones from flowering plants has been discussed for years on the boards and can find posts that are almost 10 years old talking about it.
It is more advanced because being a beginner is not going to think about cloning a flowering plant or try revegging a plant just because they need to save the strain they cant get it back.
The term is called Monster cropping

Hey Qball,

I won't go back and forth with you buddy.

Unless you do not have a choice, it is not recommended to take cuttings from flowering plants!

All the best Qball, happy toking.
