Hey guys/girls I have a situation I'm trying to figure out and any input would be great .....I primarily grow in the ground in my personal gardens but am currently helping a friend who has terminal cancer ....planting in the ground was not an option for her so I went the smart pot route ...well there in 7 gallon smarts and there doing much better than expected turning into serious monsters which is great for her but obviously were having to water every single day.......my question is would it be ok to drop these smart pots into larger smart pots without removing the 7 gallon bag there currently in .........thanks for any input like I said I'm usually in the ground outdoor but this is my dilemma with a few months to go

I'd slit up the sides & bottom, but don't remove the 7 gallon pot, then place into a 30 gallon SP. Still may need to water VERY often with the long days and the heat. Install a auto water system from the garden hose bib.

Thank you very much for your reply ...that was my plan to go to 30 gal SP but il do the slits on the bags like you've mentioned ....just glad I don't have to pull bags first cause these plants are ver very large already ..............one more quick question I'd like some opinions on .....if it does come down to watering these everyday again how often should I feed if there being watered daily ??? Thanks again

Depends on what your soil is like....Did you amend the soil in her backyard? Or is it a mix you bought from a local store or..I've got plants outside that I rarely feed cause the soil is enough for them.

They were put into ffof stretched out with some organic mix as well that fed them for a good bit but that only lasted so long .....so there well over 6 ft and needing to be fed regularly there super healthy feeding and recognizing issues isn't my problem ....it's just I'm the only one that's helping her cause people say one thing do another I've got my grows ....but I was just curious on getting these plants into bigger SP ....which I think I am just guna bury the 7gal with slits cut into 30 gal with some organic soil .....that's the plan

I'm use to doing things my own way from the beginning so this is kind of a cluster fuck ....but I'm guna flip the bill and help her out as much as I can cause her plants are gorgeous they just need to be potted up and I've never potted up out of a SP before ......usually I'm in plastic pots then into the ground on my outs

The roots will grow right through the smart pot. You can put it right on top of another pot or bury it half way down in the other pot. Both will work.
No slits then correct ....that's my dilemma some say slit the smaller pot others say the roots will proceed through the fabric there selves ....have you personally done this ....I don't see either way being wrong persay but there's gotta be advantages and disadvantages to cutting the bag or not .....IMO seems like if the roots have to poke through the bag themselves it might slow down them filling the next pot which is ok in this instance .....but they will for sure go through the fabric

Yeah. I should have chimed in earlier. Every year there are roots growing out the bottom of my 50 gal smart pots. Never out the side though of course because they're above ground...If below ground I bet they would do just fine

That's exactly why I asked this question originally in this thread ...I've heard of people going to move smart pots set on soil at the end of the year and there's roots going into the ground below.......makes sense they wouldn't come out the sides due to air pruning if I'm not mistaken .....

I would say it depends how big you want the plants. The more access to quality soil they have, the bigger they will get. If you have the roots fight their way through the cloth, I imagine that would slow down their growth to some degree. Some people want smaller more manageable plants, so that's an option.

There is every shade of gray, you can just make a bunch of 1" or 2" slits all around the pot, I think anything would make a difference -- you make holes, I'd bet some roots will find them.

Yeah there already super large plants I'm not worried about them really getting any bigger there all well over 6 ft minus pot height and super round ...very nice plants I just wana slow down how fast there drying out cause I'm helping my friend with cancer and between my own garden and hers it's hard having to water hers every morning already so that's my goal get if they don't get any bigger I wouldn't mind at all honestly
