Sorry but there can be no common ground between racists and those not afflicted with that disease. Trump clearly appeals to white power racists and pretty much nobody else. As with the people who voted for Hitler, the people who support Trump only hear that he will bring them back to a golden time that never existed. His promise to create a new police force with the mandate to ferret out 11 million "people who don't belong here" is reminiscent of 20th century Nazi politics. And the average American continues to point fingers at the opposing political side instead of coming together and taking our country back from the oligarchs.
If we don't do it, no one will.
For myself, I can't overlook racist statements or behavior. To your point, those statements are divisive statements and and not ones that bring people together.
For a time, the shit Trump says almost daily about Muslims, Mexicans, and African Americans were off limits for mainstream politicians. Republicans resorted to dog whistle statements but avoided overtly racist comments. Trump and the radical white right wing are bringing that shit back to the mainstream. Maybe we are seeing the last gasp of 20th century racism in the US. I hope so.
