was driving last night blinding people with my new head lights damn those led bulbs are bright and white . the kelvins are 6000k . ok to me they look like they are about equal to a 1000 watt hps on the road . so what I want to do is take some led bulbs and drill holes in a hood throw them into the hood reflector see how the bulbs actually flood out and how bright they actually are . for veg . they will pull 200 watts dc not an issue have a power pack to run them . tried to get some info off the internet about the led automotive bulbs could not find shit about lumens . the par out put could be absolutely useless this is going to be an experiment . seriously thinking of doing this home made led . the bulbs are about 30 bucks ebay . what are your opinions ?

You can try I think it would be useless honestly the reason they go so far I due to how the automotive companies design the housings.

lol. proves it will work ! im just messing around here I don't really need to budget it that much lol . its just for fun . but what if it does work could be huge . for flower I seriously doubt it will have any quality . have a feeling the plant will have a lot of stretch for the light . only 1 way to tell is by doing it . after I get it up and running I will post pics vs a 1000 watt mh .

I just remembered this from a few years back

Getting high on lights: Thieves target Porsche owners... but only for the headlights so they can grow marijuana

"And the high-intensity discharge bulbs give off more heat and require much less power than standard grow lamps, and most importantly they offer the right quality of light and heat"

Does this sentence sound contradictory at all or is it me reading it wrong ? If they give off more heat how does that translate to "right quality of light & heat" ?

ok I found some information on other bulbs . my conclusion I am comparing them to t5 bulbs the energy use will be the same . but for metal halide . it wins slightly for power savings . nothing beats a mh bulb for veg except the sun or plasma .
I wont be messing with this kit after I found this info .

New COB Technology: less wattage, with equivalent brightness as a 120w Cree SMD

COB is the most recent development in 360° Beam technology using chips with multiple diodes. There is no casing with COB technology which enables a much denser 360° Beam array of light compared to SMD. A consistent and controlled light beam is given off, without any visible individual light points, thus offering great optics. COB offers a greatly improved lumen per watt ratio compared to other LED technologies such as SMD.
COB technology gives the best conditions for optimal cooling, which in turn will increase efficiency and lengthen the overall life of the lamp. https://www.amazon.com/80W-All-One-360°-Headlights/dp/B019QZS9T8/ref=pd_sim_263_5?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=YGHA45TJKS8CYWZE7VGX

I dont know why most led bulbs are marketed with such hype, the best growers are still using twice the amount of led wattage to equal hps/mh. As for comparing led to t5/t8 there is no way their true lumens per watt equal that of a t5 let alone a t8.

You can dabble all you want with leds but watt for watt they are still some distance off conventional growlights.

i would put 400 watts of good cobs up against any 600 watt hps out there. the targetted spectrum more than makes up for the difference in raw output, and less juice used = less heat to deal with. that means less exhaust needed and a more stable environment in your tent

Where's the proof that top growers are using hps more so than LEDs? I was an hid user hell I built my house around the concept of still using them. Then I researched. And found I could grow just as well or better using less wattage both from lights and my geothermal to cool. This is coming from a person that doesn't need to pay for electricity because I run solar panels to power my house the only difference for me is I get payed for the excess power I make from the power company. I make a lot more excess energy now.
