When do you start counting the flowering days?

I know each strain has a certain number of flowering days (approx) before harvest. The thing I DON'T know is...WHEN do you start counting those days? I know it can't be when the hairs start showing...that's got to be too early, but I can't figure out, nor can I find when to start the count.

Please help me out with this (probably dumb) question.

when a breeder tells you its a 65-75 day strain they note flowering begins when it begins regardless of the light change. when the plant is flowering it is flowering, could be a couple weeks after the light change often.

this is one reason so much weed is harvested early..."flowering starts at light change" (2 weeks early maybe?)

Just start counting when you see pistils emerge and go from there. I find it best to keep an eye on them between late july to mid august. Then record the date in your area for future grows.

There's no approximate date. Just look at those as a general guide. Think of that as a best case scenario. You wanna check those tricomes.
If not then go by your "flowering time" and add 10-14 days. Wait for the pistils to die off and the buds fatten up and swallow them.

You less do get less hours of light when days get short

There is no reason to count flowering days, especially outdoors. It will be ready in October-ish if you didn't go straight sativa.

MonkeyGrinder has it right. Flowering starts when pistils emerge forming a bud. Roughly 7 to 10 days after 12/12 flip

Exactly, which is why so many outdoor plants finish in 23 to 38 days.

Ill agree with this. I call it transition. It takes a bit. I wait until they really start to stretch and buds set in.

It depends on the light also. Outdoors it takes a little longer because the days get shorter slower.

I don't follow a calender anyways. Its done when its done.

The breeder time is only an estimate and different grow equipment and styles can affect flowering times.
