Smell issue

Im in a house thats been converted into a flat, theres someone that lives below me. Thinking of setting up a grow but theres a chimney with venting in both rooms where fire places used to be just wondering if you guys think that the smell will be in an issue for the people below me.

Was also thinking should i vent through these vents as the heat should travel up along with the smell right? (That just sounds to risky to me lol). They prob have the same vents in the same places too.

Get a good carbon filter and a good tent and some low odor strains like Northern Lights. Get some room fresheners and put right by the vents. Do not vent into the vents, that will just put odor there and the air movement there probably isn't enough to guarantee the odors will go up. With the room fresheners by the vents hopefully that odor will penetrate enough to help cover the smell that escapes thru the carbon filter.

Depends on the type of chimney. If each chimney is separate then check whether your vent goes up. If it does then smoke test it, if its all good I would use it to extract to. That's what I do. There shouldn't be vents connecting your flat your neighbours but shouldn't doesn't mean there isn't.
Personally I don't think there's better than venting into a chimney provided you know its not capped off and its going up and not shared. Unscrew the vents and put camera phone in, look up and down, it likely that the chimney vent is where your fireplace would of been originally, meaning its your chimney. Its not 100% certain though with cowboy builders these days and shitty flat conversions.

Edit, look at the roof from a distance, if there isn't at least as many chimney pots as there are flats don't risk it.

I think there is two chimneys and it is two flats (but the house next door has two chimneys and its a house not a flat conversion like mine)

Thanks for the info

I have just a hole in the top of my grow box with a netted bag of activated carbon covering the hole and a fan underneath pushing air from the box through the activated carbon and I can't smell a thing.
Trust me it works because I was scared of the smell also and I promise let it run for 6 hr and you won't smell a thingIMG_20171017_211713.jpg IMG_20171017_211658.jpg IMG_20171017_211658.jpg IMG_20171017_211713.jpg

You don't smell a thing because you are acclimated to the odor. I can guarantee you that other people coming in can smell it.

No I have people coming over and they didn't smell it, I even asked my mom when she came by if she could smell weed she said no and I work 12 hr shifts and when I get home the smell is non existent.
And I don't smoke I just grow for a hobby and give it away so my nose is not smelling weed all day.
I don't know why but it's something about growing weed and other plants that relaxes me

They cant smell it because that fan is just blowing air at a bag of carbon, I very much doubt any air is leaving the tent.
Manuel , you cant extract heat or air like that. But if its working for you, hey, you go for it.
I know what you mean about growing plants been relaxing though. There's something very rewarding about growing any type of plant.

I have 7 chimneys on my house, each is totally separate ( but all in the same chimney breast) and would of originally belonged to a fireplace in every room. So for me, all I had to do was figure out which pot linked to which room and remove a brick for the right one. I also removed 2 bricks from the basement chimney which serves as my intake, the basement is many degrees cooler than the rest of the house..

Shouldn't be too hard to figure out if yours are usable. Good luck with it. Fingers crossed. :bigjoint:

PS, since your above them even if theirs is connected the air will rise as long as its not capped at the top, it would be pointless putting vents in if it were capped off as it wouldn't allow air movement. Chimneys are by design capable of taking far more air than your average fan would put out.

True there shouldnt be any reason to have vents on both chimney breasts. Ill put a camera phone in to see if i can see straight through the chimney. Smoke testing sounds awkward to me.

Btw my grow will be some stinky bbc
I assume the poster is in the UK or outside the USA. Odor crystals that are volcanic rocks last forever. You put them outside for 8 hours in the sun every 8 to 9 months to recharge them. This is probably not a total solution but in the USA these are cheap partial solution.

Some brand names in the USA are Homax, Zeolite and Gonzo.
