Yeah im just saying for conversation purposes. If they are set on using 1000w per 5x5 and hear these 500w lights equal that they scratch their heads and say well electricity is cheap so why not use more and get more buds? I just dont get why they feel limited to using 500w? Cost of equipment?

Well, maybe because the HLG-550 "only" delievers about the 550w. But of course you could also use 6 qboards and two HLG-480 to get to the 1000w. However, you should not exeed the maximum light intense your plants can handle. If you get into areas above 1500μmol / s, it will be counterproductive.

These lights produce More light per watt than HID period. A lot more. These are not race car engines, more is NOT always better. There is a limit to how much light a plant can use after that its a total waste of electricity. IMO, even if your running say 600 watts of QB, you may be wasting money on electricity if your no using CO2 in a sealed room to get the most out of your plants. Above about 900 ppf your plants have maxed out photo synthesis and will actually make phyiscal and chemical change to reduce the amount of light being absorbed, unless CO2 increased. Just consuming more watts is not going to gain anyone anything. I'll bet a lot of these HID guys running 1000 watt HPS lights aren't getting the yeilds they could be because they think its like horsepower MORE MORE MORE!
ppfd is the metric you want to use, not watts. How much LIGHT is your HID or COB, etc making. When I can have a light that puts out twice the ppfd at 1/2 the power, requires no bulb changes, doesn't degrade your years, and has better spectrum, you tell me why I'd waste my money on old, dead technology........

and electricity is NOT always cheap! I hear people in California paying up to $.60/kw! that would mean 1000 watts of light is costing you 60 cents PER HOUR. You call that cheap? A photo period grow of 100 days would cost $832..............
Could not more agree.
I pay half as much and weep for every wasted watt.
In some places(here in the EU), the power consumption is also an instrument of investigation against illegal growers.
Here, a small power consumption is essential. I know many who flew up because of too much HPS's in a small 2 room apartment.

You can get Bergy windplants up to 10Kw. there are some smaller units that produce up to 700watts. I've lived in a solar/wind powered home. I installed everything and did the wiring.

With modern solar panels, you could power a 135 watt kit for several hours a day with just one panel and an inverter, possibly with just a buck converter! I think that would be much more feasible than a complete solar conversion. Start small and build from there.

I wonder how big that is?

Or something like this perhaps.....

Or u can get a magnet or just attach a free line or your electric and by pass your meter...
Not free electric for the whole house though, that' too obvious lol
Just a wee ring main to feed your lights.
I don't do it myself but lots of friends do.
The meter man reported me for a couple of lead tags missing on the meter box and an engineer came out to inspect to see if I was stealing electric lol.
He turned off the electrics and tested the sockets n lights but everything was ok.

You can add more. What I've seen is most growers aren't going to capitalize on the extra light though. When you hit higher light levels the plants metabolism it's really high. If you aren't on top of your game you will have deficiencies. I've seen a lot of growers do better with a 600HPS than the did with a 1000HPS. Then again I know a guy with a masters in botany. He can run plants way harder. Try 90+F and 3000+ ppfd. He says you can get deficiencies in a matter of hours lol. He now works for one of the biggest consulting firms I've ever seen. 600-800 ppfd is an average growers sweet spot. Just my observations though.

So why is the HLG550 1160ppf?
