That might be part of the problem. Education systems, unless they are for profit, should never lead you to think you will get a decent job simply because you graduated from their school. The responsibility is yours to find that job. I think I mentioned U. of Phoenix and Fullsail as examples of this earlier. Both for profit schools, both not worth the money spent on the education.

Who loaned you the money? The school? Who sold you the lie? Trump University?

Then why would anyone go on average $50k in debt for no monetary gain? I would have done better investing that money in the market, or simply buying shares in the University. I was sold the idea since I was in 3rd grade, repeatedly shown the statistics of college vs non-college earnings, can't think of one time anyone said it was not the best path to a career. But the economy changed, the job market changed, education cost went up and the earnings to pay it back vanished. Also, I was stupid enough to believe my degree/major would land me a job.

The school didn't loan me the money, the government that allowed that state university to receive government back unsecured loans did. The school and the government are both guaranteed to make money the way they set it up. Do you not see a problem with a school taking $50k in government backed loans without any promise to the government that the money would be spent making sure that the lendee could pay back that debt? To me, it looks like the lender and the university are abusing both students and the taxpayer subsidizing the loans.

I get the difference between secure and unsecure debt. If the education sold to you actually lead to a decent job, or if you were at least warned/informed about the actual job placement rates for your major, there would be less to no harm done. My gripe is mostly with the institution that claimed 98-99% job placement (go check the actual stats from 2007-today) and with the accreditation of that institution to accept government back unsecure loans. From my perspective, it was a predatory loan because I was sold a lie.

For-profit schools have a lot to answer for and the people in congress who back them should be burned at the stake.

Government backed student loans, if they are to be given out at all, should go only to state-run schools. Non-profit private schools should look for their money elsewhere too.
