Northern California Poppies

Hello all,
Long time lurker and new poster. I'd like to share with you all some poppies I have seen growing in a yard not too far from my own. I have also seen that they have a nice hydroponic set up as well.

The ones growing outside were planted in September and are doing pretty well. The one in the red pot got a little too much water and has started showing signs of over watering i.e. Yellow, brittle leaves, etc. The poppies in the small plots are doing great and are looking very healthy. The biggest one in the red pot is about to hit the bolt stage.

The hydroponic grow is about 6 weeks into it and the plants are just about ready for their final culling. There are six net pots filled with hydrocorn, sitting in a 18 gallon Rubbermaid tote. At the bottom of the tote is a nice big air stone and some fox farms nutrients in the water now (about half strength). The lights are nothing special, they are 4ft fluorescent lights (one blue and one yellow) so that they get all light color on the spectrum (warm light and "cool" light). They are on a 14/10 light schedule and are set on a timer.

The whole hydroponic set up only cost a whopping $50 dollars and could be set up in a small closet. The strain of poppies growing are Persian whites and are said to contain a lot of goodies (alkaloids; morphine and codeine being the most available). The whole grow should take around 3-4 months probably yielding 60-80 pods. good for a $50 set up in a closet.

Thank you all! And I'd greatly appreciate any advice/constructive criticism that you may have. I look forward to becoming a valuable member of rollitup! Happy nodding :)

My mom had tons of poppies growing in the yard and I used to bleed the heads for sap and smoke it raw with hash after it dried out. Total relaxation. :)

All over Vancouver there are lots of opium poppies growing everywhere brought over by the Chinese immigrants ages ago. The whole plant has opium in it all over but more concentrated in the sap.

I want some
Haha! Grow your own dude! its honestly waaayyy easier than growing bud... They are like weeds, for real dude... It seems like the poppies that are stepped on, whipped by wind, bushed up against, all seem to grow bigger and stronger than the ones that are treated like glass! lol. I definitely thought before I started was gonna be a lot harder than it actually was. But after I sowed the seeds, about a week later I had hundreds of sprouts, and after some thinning, I had some nice big seedlings. All the plants, except for the hydroponic plants, are about ready to hit the "bolt" stage where the stems shoot up and start to produce the flowers. I cant wait.... I'll keep y'all posted with photos and details in the days/weeks to come :)

Which poppy are you growing? I looked up the California golden poppy and it doesn't contain opium, but it does contain several alkaloids that will produce mild sedative effects if smoked.

*Edit - just re-read and saw you mentioned Persian White poppies, my bad.

Yes they're called "china white" poppies from chillHawaiian.com. But they're real name is Persian whites.

As for the California poppy... I've never heard of anyone collecting anything that was worth a damn. The only poppies that contain opium is Papaver somniferum.

I actually have an update from my hydroponic setup. They're about 7 weeks in now and are moving right along. They look very healthy. IMG_4610.JPGIMG_4611.JPGIMG_4613.JPGIMG_4616.JPG

I don't want t be too candid here but... I've delivered pizza in the east San Francisco bay area over the last 5 years and I've seen 3 different households sporting tall bulbous poppy's. Some with lavender purple petals with black spots, some crimson with black spots, and some peach with black spots.

I actually have the seeds of all three varieties. I've grown out two types but not all as of yet. One in particular bulbs out bigger than the other two. Milks twice as much. :)

So *UPDATE* time... well unfortunately everyone of the hydroponic poppies has died... I had ordered a very cheap pH meter on Amazon and had hoped that it would be good enough.... well it wasn't. It broke after the first test of the res water haha. Well long story short a month later I bought a simple liquid pH test kit from general hydroponics and it worked great... it was a day late and a dollar short though, because the poppies had already gotten past the point of no return... turns out the pH was insanely low at 4.5.... I really don't know what happened. I think I might've been stoned and put pH down in the res more than once haha FUCK!! Oh well my out door poppies are doing great! I'll post a few photos of them soon.
