Home use LED bulb strength?

So I recently made a micro grow box. I’m using a 7 way splitter with 5k 8.8w FEIT led bulbs, bought from Home Depot. My question is do these little LEDs need to be keep 18in away from you plants as well? Also I want to cut off the “Hood” I feel like its just for show and dimming my lights.

I use sylvanna brand house LEDs to veg with great results. I think that cutting off the top is a bad idea and makes them do worse. Most people here disagree with me on that point.

About a foot or so. The reason to keep the diffusers on is to spread out the light and let it do its job. I did a lot of testing of brands and if the diffusers on or off is helpful. Sylvanna has the most lumens per watt I found at Walmart, are still a good price too. I use 7 bulbs pointed straight down on power strips with the socket adapters. Cheap and works great for me.

Thanks for info! Yeah honestly I don’t want to mess my lights up anyway lol.

A few years old info in a few years old thread. Cutting the diffuser of back then may have been a good idea when the chips were dogshit.
in the time since that thread was made they are basically the same midpowers that increased maybe 5% in efficiency. there were 1700 lm 15W bulbs 2 years ago, what are that at now?

A slight efficiency bump really doesnt invalidate anything in that thread at all.

Not true. Those were 100/lm a watt @5k and these now at 110lm/watt at 2700. Huge differance.
The bulbs in that thread dont even compare.

where are they at now?
Maybe if your using a shitty Walmart brand bulb.. how about you do some testing on the slyvannas so you can see what I mean? I've done the side by sides. I can veg more plants, bigger, and with less watts with the diffusers on.

You just saw that thread the dude took the diffusers off on an it took him like 800 some odd watts to do what I'm doing with 70.

youre beating 800W with 70W? obviously a typo

for my actual garden ive moved on from techs that use less than 150 lm/w awhile ago, i use these for clones/ quarantined plants,/ oddball stuff.

my clone tray really doesnt care if the 15W bulb above it is 1400 or 1700 lumens

shitty walmart brand bulb is required to meet the same energy star standards as the osram sylvanias next to it on the shelf.

osrams might be better... again im not putting much thought into it.. just from testing these 2 years ago i pretty much have a lifetime supply of them

It's funny as fuck to me that you laugh at off brand cobs in diy builds but if its shitty off brand lightbulbs it's the same as namebrand to you in this application. Maybe the tech has gotten better in 2 years.. who would imagine??

And no not a typo. My 70 watts of sylvanna with diffusers is beating what that guy built in that recent thread where he built that fire waiting to happen. All that "cut the diffusers off" logic was when the chips were to weak to do any good. Times have changed and I'm just waiting for you guys to catch on to the fact.

Dude your stuck 2 years in the past. Maybe open yourself to the possibility that off the shelf LEDs have moved on. You he think its toxic to point out that there is a differance between off brand Walmart LEDs and slyvannas?

You arnt using your brain, you just see me post an are triggered hahaha

example? i never put down chips that have actual specs

i will never put that much thought into a $5 lightbulb that might crack 120 lm/W on a good day

people who are serious, and actually investing hundreds of dollars in a setup, should be using the best cobs they can get (considering decent cobs with photometric data start under $10 its not like im being snobbish)

And no not a typo. My 70 watts of sylvanna with diffusers is beating what that guy built in that recent thread where he built that fire waiting to happen.
not sure what youre talking about, but 70W of one grower in one place, and an entirely different setup by another person somewhere else, how is that even comparable. I'm not sure what "beating" mean in this case. And if you really think your mid-powers are literally 11 times more efficient than his, well id be patenting that! led manufacturers kill each other for a 10% gain and here you are at 1100%. Unless his chips are from 1995 thats probably not very likely

Times have changed and I'm just waiting for you guys to catch on to the fact.
you'll never convince me to base any kind of serious setup around 110 lm/W technology, sorry. good luck with your grow.

Yes, times have changed, and light bulbs sold at home depot that are literally in a race to the bottom on cost because they have no incentive to be more efficent, after achieving the energy star minimum efficiency, is really not the way forward for people looking for solutions north of 2 umol/J. I dont hesitate to recommend these bulbs to new growers in small spaces as they are cost effective, but those are people who would otherwise be using CFLs or garbage blurple lights.

yes i 100% think its erroneous to represent that there is some dramatic difference with zero data to back it up. get 2 similar wattage bulbs and show us a controlled test with a par meter and a wattsup and we'll talk. i would be literally shocked if there is more than a 10-15% difference between the best osram/sylvania and the cheapest generic of similar wattage.

that would actually be a valuable contribution to the forum instead of badmouthing other people with anecdotal information

You claim to know so much but you wont do a test. You dont want to hear about my results. Sounds to me like you just dont want new information, and your happy with 2 year old anecdotal evidance from someone you like, vs current anecdotal evidence from someone you dont.

I like these bulbs because I can set up a area for under 20 bucks an a quick trip to Walmart. It isnt ment to be max performance diy LEDs. Its ment to be a simple solution that's very low cost, that anyone can do.
