I keep my 4 bulb 4 ft t5 about 5 inches or so from my seedlings.Pics are from 30 minutes after lights on.
Definitely. I had been hoping I could repot this weekend, but that looks way too soon.id repot in a week and cover most that stem with medium. it will just mean more space for roots to grow along. id keep like half an inch above medium level of stem exposed
Have you not completed enough grows to know when to transplant?Definitely. I had been hoping I could repot this weekend, but that looks way too soon.
Is there a ‘tell’ for best time to transplant? Third leaf? 5th leaf? Something else?

There's a good thread on how to transplant the long stringy stems . step by step with pics. It's in the newbie central part of the forums. Highly recommend it helped me a few weeks ago.My seedlings are looking very sad.
T5 light is less than a foot off of them, trying to keep stretch to a minimum.
I was hoping to transplant to 3 gal pots, and sink the seedling a few inches deeper, but I’m not sure that these are going to make it to transplant.
Guidance appreciated.

Settle down, grow master, I think this is my third of fourth time with seeds.Have you not completed enough grows to know when to transplant?
Transplant when the roots have filled the previous pot probably 2 weeks at a guess for you.
Did seedlings regain stem strength after watering/can you now remove stupid supports?
Thanks.Invest in some small air pots, 1L or so and plant directly to those. Then you don't need to worry about transplanting too soon, you can leave them in those for weeks and even get the first round of topping done. If you are in no rush to reach max veg they also serve to bide time. You will end up with a very dense yet optimised root system in only a few weeks. From that point you can go direct to final pot easily. Way less hassle and better roots, less disturbed. A sure sign that you are ready to up pot to final (only attempt this with air prune pots) is when a daily watering is no longer enough to stop wilting. However if you were automated or didn't mind feeding twice a day you could continue in the small pot but size would likely start to become limited then, compared to up potting.
