I should grow in soil.

HPS are better, and worse than LED.

Correct soil PH range is 6.67-6.69
Correct Coir PH range is unknown, hence the reason I should grow in soil.

Should you grow in soil or coir ?

Are HPS better or worse than LED ?

What are correct PH ranges for soil&coir?

- LET'S TALK.

Personally I’ve only ever grown in coir with HID lighting.

Coir - IMO.

pH should be kept as close to 5.8 as possible without going below 5.5 or above 6.2 as with coir its an inert medium meaning there is very little nutrient benefit from the coir alone.
Holding within this pH range allows all the nutrients to be available for uptake.

When you know coir well enough you can tailor the pH to allow an easier uptake of certain nutrients. Such as 5.5 for better Ca uptake, 6.0 for better Mg uptake etc

Over time it can hold on to Calcium and Potassium. So most coco nutrients tend to have a higher amount of Ca and K to compensate for this feature.

I find nutrients with Ca around 3-5% and Mg around 1-2% tend to work the best.

I like higher N feeds around 3-4% nitrogen.

EC testing nutrient solution and comparing it to run off EC can help you understand how the plant is feeding as far as nutrient strength is concerned.

If your EC increases coming out as runoff then it’s a pretty good indicator that your nutrients are mixed too strong.

EC decreasing by more than -0.2 in the runoff then increase your strength next time.

I transplant 3 times in total. Small Dixie cup to start seeds, then into 1gallon pot and then finally into a 4 gallon pot.

I use straight coco coir that’s been pre buffered and out of the bag reads 1.2EC canna coco pro.

During seedling stage I water every few days when the surface becomes dry.

Once I transplant into 1G I water every other day and continue this until harvest making sure I achieve approx 20% runoff of what’s gone in.

Try not to let coco coir dry out too much as it can cause accumulation of salt build up as crystals.

A good nutrient line along with the ability to add additional Ca and Mg when required (I use canna mono Ca and Epsom Salts) as I find during flowering additional Ca and Mg is required to keep nice healthy green leaves through the heavy flowering stages.

Let’s talk!

What are you experiences with coco or soil?

I use a 250w CFL 6400k for seedling stage.

Switch to 400w MH during veg and first 2 weeks of 12/12.

Then to a 400w HPS for the remainder of flowering.

Never used LED before but I am intrigued by them.

Coir hasnt been easy to figure out but I'm managing. I'm probably going to go back to soil because it's more user friendly in my experiences.

I used LED (HLG65) and I too use CFL for seedlings stage or I did. I actually use a 45W blurp light for seedlings now but that's because I have extra lights I bought but don't use.

I do 2 transplants, from a solo cup to a 5G pot. I made this handy dolly with a drain tray I can slide out easily to catch the excess run-off. I too aim for 20% but I typically get 10% but never less. Salt build up doesn't take long. However using R.O I don't hit this issue as much but w/ nutes it can happen. I feed accordingly which is about every watering or every other. I find in coir you have to feed much more often. I always add Cal-Mag to make up for using R.O water. I'm concerned about my humidity levels remaining consistent... I bought 2 different humidifiers and by the second one I thought I had it locked down but recently I've been struggling to get 55%. The room (8'X8') seems to be steady at 46% which if fine for flowering tho I'd like to see at least 50%. I will just have to buy a better humidifier. Perhaps it's because this week was really cold -20C. My room sits at a comfortable 27C lights on and 22C lights off. I have my heater on a timer also and that is locked down. But the humidity... In the summer I felt I was trying to keep it down now in winter I'm working on going up. Gezzz lol. I love growing so in all actuality I enjoy the problems. I love to learn more about growing and reading & talking with other enthusiasts.

Something new I'm trying on this run though. I decided not to use a SCROG or stakes. I'm actually using twine to the ceiling. It is much faster for adjusting and adding. Also for watering. I find the SCROG locks it in place and if any adjustments need to be made it can be very challenging. Did someone say tomato cages ? Hahahaha I hope not.

Lol I hear ya! I'm gonna be going back to soil myself. I've never used HPS but that's all I ever hear about. I hear it is the best way but the argument of vs. LED is debatable. I choose LED because of energy savings.

That's a matter of personal opinion.
In my opinion, CMH are considerably better than HPS

Good luck

If your interested in using hps but like the benefits of saving energy should consider CMH like hugo mentioned.

Lol you & I have had many discussions about this one hahahaha I know your head strong HPS lol
Its not about what light i personally choose to run. The click here lie about hps i just look like a supporter because i dont resign to their bs and quote reality not broscience.

I also back this up with a lot of basic setup and how to run a tent info for any and all lifhts anywhere un the world indoors, sucks theres so many narrow minded trolls gotta wreck the info of ages - mainly they use leds :-)

Lol ya I know ya get a bad rap on here for supporting so hard but I love your loyalty. And clearly this isn't your first trip to the corner store lol ! What type of set up do you run ? Soil or coir of hydro or or ? Room size ? Amount of plants etc...

Grow in soil coir

HPS is better except for LED's

pH should be in the range best suited for nutrient uptake.

How i learn coco and rockwool whilst soil growing was simply to run one extra plant not in soil each veg and then flower cycle.

Bag of coco plus a & b or a pack of rockwool cubes and a + b again no more that £20.

You can play to your strengths in soil but still use coco or hydro.

Atm im a soil grower in a 1x1 with switchable 600w digi and a bottle of biobizz fish mix does everything start to finish but i keep it far to simple thesedays, just two desk fans for extraction im almost regretting owning a variac and 6" ruck for the cost as gathering a lot of dust.

I think i saw the growers here using barebulb low extraction simple soil grows as a challengecand over the years ditched most things for just bare basic and easy.

Even now thinking i use to have most ferts additives benies boosters ph ppm meters etc etc but now just one bottle in a big old empty cupboard.

Seems almost too easy thesedays, managing to grow qnd juggle life is the problem now, police landlord dru dealers all on my case last year and fuck all worj here plus an 18 year old kid who is doing a good job at becoming a violent drug taking asshole.

Cant grow enough for that shit :-)

I was using 2 x 600w HPS (w/cool tubes) & a 400w MH, total 1600W for flower, now I'm using 3 x 315w CMH (2 x 3100K & 1 x 4100K) which is 945w.
I don't need a cool tube or hood & I'm getting as least as much product as before.
This right here is what I was referring to when j said do some research. Cmh imo best of both worlds power of penetration like a hps and energy saving like LED reason why I started the switch

In the middle of switching over to cmh from hps. I would recommend doing some research so you get a good idea of what each light system is beneficial at and you can figure out what is best for you and your circumstances. When it comes to lights you will have many different answers/opinions take each to grain
Most definitely will learn and read up before making any decisions. Thanks for your help.
