Sen. Bernie Sanders finished ahead of Joe Biden in the first major national poll of the year that did not find the former vice president leading the pack of potential 2020 Democratic presidential candidates.

When asked whom they would support from a list of 20 candidates – including "someone else" – 29% named Sanders, and 24% named Biden in an Emerson College poll released Monday. They were trailed by South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, who was the pick of 9% of likely Democratic primary voters.

California Sen. Kamala Harris and former Texas Rep. Beto O'Rourke each came in at 8%, and 7% picked Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren. Former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro got 3%, as did entrepreneur Andrew Yang. New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker got 2%, and the rest of the field got 1% or less.

This doesn't look good to me, because I don't see how an avowed Socialist has any chance of being POTUS in 2020.

I got a feeling Trump is smiling.

Polls shouldn't replace reasoning with people.

What has Biden done or what policies does he have that would convince people to vote for him? I have no idea what he stands for other than he's a "centrist" and I'm not even sure what that means.

Sanders has his own problems in that he's pretty much just attracting interest from people who voted for him the first time except he's lost people like me who don't like his divisiveness.. He has nearly zero appeal to black and women voters. As you are saying he doesn't appeal to long time Democratic party members. The only way he wins the primary is if the rest if the field is split up so much that 25% of the vote is enough to win the nomination.

Trump has his own problems outside of his rabid base of support but he's starting with about 40% of the vote right now. So, yeah, your concern is not unjustified. Every Democratic candidate looks weak compared to that given how many Democratic candidates there are. Unlike the last election, let us not become complacent. Let's pull together for whomever wins the nomination.

impeachment isn't good enough. i hope the sdny, ny ag, and others indict him for all his shady business deals, money laundering, rico charges, tax evasion etc and he rots in prison.

and the Trump "brand" is ruined worldwide.
