Just an example man. I'm gonna bow out here, people don't want to listen. Been doing it for years with really good success though. My smoke always has compliments, there is still a lot that we think we know, ya know?

The hay smell is chlorophyll leaving the plant. It's completely normal and goes away as the buds even out moisture content. A longer dry/cure enables the chlorophyll to break down and escape with moisture. A shorter dry/cure will work fine, just much more burping before you reach the curing zone.

Everyone's environment is different. It will take awhile to work out whats going to work best for you.
You need to pay as much attention to your drying area as you do the flower area.
Air gently circulating at 60F at 60% RH is a nice place to start.

Ive grown some hay and ive grown some dank. Hay has always been from to fast a dry.

Not very many people(home hobbyists) have complete control over their drying environment to keep a steady 60/60 count.I certainly can't.
In MY environment,3-5 days hanging and 2 in paper bags.Spring and summer time 3 days hang 1 in the bag and then into jar with a hygrometer to get down to 62 rh.Some cultivars skip the bag and go right into the jar.
My dry environment 74-80 F 55-62 Rh day and night readings,plenty of airflow.Lol My buds have never seen 60F. Still dank dank dank. Only big fans are taken,bud/sugars leaves are left intact.I dry trim(I believe this helps keep some smell).I dislike wet trimming.
Op you'll need to learn and adjust to your dry environment or gain complete control of it.
You'll also need to find out what works for you in said environment.Wet trim,dry trim,hang whole plant/s,branches only or nugs separated from the branches.

Dry and cure technique is just as if not more important than ya grow game.There are a few things I would attribute to the hay smell but I'll leave it to the pros.

This sounds like an early chop. It can smell great when you chop it but smell like lawn clippings when dry if you chop early. My weed always stinks no matter how I dry it.

I'm a dry trimmer to, I think it helps slow the dry.
Also brings a trim tray into the picture for the home grower.

Yeah it's trim bin. And I couldn't tell you what the shaker is, I've had it for years. Check reviews and sift through the dip shits, lol.

Im only trimming a plant or so at a time so I find this one works for me. Another grower who uses the same one has a few different sizes of screen.

Start with a killer strain. Look for Pineapple Fields. Nobody can hide the odor of that stuff. And go organic soil. You can grow killer shit with hydro but you can with super soil too. Lot less maintenance than hydro.

No. Every biodetetable level of chlorophyll smells like breath mints. The level of chlorophyll in a plant is no biodetetable. If your plants smells minty it's from salicylates in you snake oils, if your plant smells like rotting grass, its rotting grass.

Yea, I don't know what in the hell you're talking about, but I don't think you do either.

Chlorophyll breaks down through oxygenase during the drying process, hence the need for circulation AND humidity during curing. As it's broken down, it is released and carried away through gas exchange.
