I'm really starting to despise religion...

I grew up in a christian household. Everything we did/said/ experienced was a result of God. As I've gotten older I've started to question things alot more.I have a good friend who converted to islam about 6-8 months ago. I understand that during the infancy of conversion people become almost fanatical about their religion. To make matters worse he used to scold me on my religious beliefs. Anyway...it seems as if he has become void of all logic and no matter what you say he counters it with a "Because Allah said so" type response. So we go on to Discuss Marijuana. I know a few other muslims who use marijuana. They do not consider it Haram, and use it as a sacrament. This guy goes on to say it is Haram, and Allah only condones it medically. So I go on to list the many reasons why people use medical Marijuana and that not all doctors prescribe it for Life or death situations. He doesn't buy it. Stating that pain is not a reason for it. Only terminal life or death illness. I go on to say: "Someone in pain so severe that they cannot enjoy everyday life is dying." He says life is merely just breathing. I cut the conversation off there. There is no spirituality left. It's only religion.
No compassion...no nothing. Straight by the book. It's sad.

Anyway I was just ranting...

For me, as a woman who was raised with NO religion (both my folks were brought up very Catholic, then after marriage rejected the church, almost completely), but who has studied a bit of Joseph Campbell and mythology, I feel that it is not religion that is the issue here, but man. Religion is nothing but a bunch of ideas. Where the problem lies is in man's practice of religion.

And that's my $2.00 (cuz two cents don't buy ya shit these days).

I agree 100%. I believe I can have a spiritual relationship with god. The wires get crossed when man get's in the way.

Yeah, especially when they start getting all fundamentalist on your ass. Take my ex-husband, for example. He was much like your friend, and even declared on MANY an occasion how he could never be sucked in, especially as a "born again". Wanna guess where he's at now? Wanna guess what reasons he used, for YEARS, for why he wasn't spending time with his boys?

So, one day I asked him, What would Jesus do?
(He didn't like me asking that question very much, but he was married to me so he knows how I am.)

You have people in church who wont even talk to other members of the congregation unless they dress a certain way. Christianity isn't a religion it's a lifestyle. Whether or not you spend your life in a book or not...it comes down to practice. The most Christian like people I've met...just so happen to be atheists.

We must respect the other fellow's religion, but only in the sense and to the extent that we respect his theory that his wife is beautiful and his children smart.

There is right and there is wrong. If you follow that rule no matter what religion you are things will work out ok.
