Carbon Filters

So I’m looking for a fan/filter combo on amazon for a 2x4x6 cabinet. Thinking of getting a 6inch. My question is, should I get a 6inch fan and an 8inch filter? It seems like all the combos have the carbon filter 2 inches smaller then the fan. Like sure the filter is 6 inch but the connection is 4inch. Sorry if this doesn’t make sense but I’m very high and very confused.

2x4x6 i think 6 in is overkill but could be dialed back i guess. I run a fusion breathe 4in in my 3x3x6 it does more than a good job and ia very quiet even turned on full. Can't smell a thing. And most kits have the same inlet/outlet size

You are best to get a carbon filter rated much higher than your fan CFM. The slower the air passes thru the carbon the better odor control you have and the longer it will last. Those combos on Amazon etc are cheap but you don't get more than what you pay for with those deals.

I've been using a 6" inline fan rated at 420cfm that I run at half speed off a temp/rh controller and bought a 6" carbon filter rated at 600cfm. If my fan is only doing 210cfm at half speed then the filter is almost 3x that. I recently bought an 8" fan that will still feed thru my 6" outlet so will have a little back pressure and with it's built in speed controller nice and low the filter should be about the same. The filter is still sitting in the box almost 3 years since I bought it. lol

For that size cabinet a 4" fan with speed control is big enough. That's only 48cf and my grow room is 360cf. I'm going to double that soon I hope and why I went with the 8" fan to replace my dying 6". Just a Vivosun and not the Vortex S Series I would have preferred but less than half the price so.

You want a speed control to keep the noise down. Even a 4" is pretty loud going full bore. My room is in the basement so noise isn't really a concern.

The filters and fans are matched by cfm. The filter that comes with the kit is supposed to capable of filtering the air at the max rate the fan can push.
You dont need a huge filter to keep smells in check for most home grows.
Some of that depends on your situation.

If you are in tight quarters with your neighbours then a bigger filter than recommended will make sure no stink escapes to alert them. With a large lot and you can vent out the roof you might not even need odor control. I live on 7.5 acres with my closest neighbour a half mile away so haven't bothered with the carbon filter as yet. Sometimes like now in the middle of winter when the air is dead still my whole yard fills up with stink so anyone driving in can smell it. Now that it's legal to grow I wonder, why should I care. lol

Rippers follow the stink too and that's a good reason not to stink!

I think a 6" will be plenty for that small cabinet. I have a cheap 6" amazon filter with an 8" fan on it and it does surprisingly well.

But yeah, always ok to go bigger or better safe than sorry. I have a 4ft can filter with a 10" hyperfan on my 10x10 lmao

Thanks guys. I think I may just go with the 4 inch then. Still confused if this is a 6 or a 4. This is what they say goes with the 6 inch fan. But why would it be reduced to 4 inch
No reason it should be reduced to a 4 in fan. That filter connects right onto a 6 in fan. All u really need is a 4 in unless u want something bigger and dial it down. I notice you're from Canada aswell. These are really good kits! The speed controller makes no noise or hum aswell good quality stuff.

Another thing to consider is the length of your outlet vent. The longer it is the more resistance your fan will have to push against so if you vent out a window say 10 feet away maybe you'll want a 6 in. If you vent into the same room a 4 will be plenty

Years ago when I used a 600w HPS in my 4x4 tent, I used a 6" inline fan to match the hood / reflector opening. It was loud so I used a speed controller and it always hummed.

Fast forward 10+ years and the 4" fan/filter has been more than enough for my 4x4 tent, running 575 watts of LED's.

It's like today's 4-cylinder engine vs a V6 engine from the late 90's.

That shows the outside diameter of the filter is 6" so the outlet must be 4". That means there is only 1" depth to the carbon bed which is not much. Mine has a 2" bed of virgin Australian charcoal. The pic doesn't show how many cfm it's rated at either.

I've been growing full time for almost 20 years up here on a very low budget and going cheap over quality has always cost me more in the very short term. Try to buy quality with things that matter most and if hiding your stink is important to you don't cheap out on that. You may not need it as much as you think but I don't live at your house so can't tell for sure.

Bernoulli's principle it what it's based on. I'd run a 6" for higher flow less rate.
I got distracted before I could respond, but I was going to say the same. This is an area that it's only a few bucks more to get the bigger kit and it's much better to have too much than be scrambling for a better filter because you smell skunk walking up to your front door one day.

Well said!

LOL wut u smokin'
The only thing I can tell you about what I'm smoking is it's the same shit Trump and his defence team is smoking and they made me sign an NDA to get a hoot!

It's a totally paralyzing, mind blowing, psychedelic kind of buzz that easily explains the bizarre behaviour going on in the White House since the Dumpster took over.

It seems to be causing hair loss so I'm giving the rest to my beloved bro-in-law. ;)
