Earlier in the week I worked on the back porch. Moved two loads up to the shed at the house on the hill. Made some headway, but still lots to be moved. Maybe 4 dining chairs that look to be alright, just nasty from being outside. Not crazy about the bench seating in the dining room, so might just use them when they have been cleaned.

That Oreo jug and bean crock are pretty cool. Are you checking to make sure any of that is collectible ($$)? Every time I go to the VOA and look at all the glassware and ceramic stuff, I wonder how much of it is worth bucks. Is the river by the house "fishable"?

I haven't googled anything. But the late husband of the lady we bought the house from had a high end junk shop in Tally. When he died she cleaned out his shop and a lot of it is still in the house. There are some vases marked 2-300 bucks. The wife did google these. They were worth about 125, but some by that guy go for as high as 2K.

The Col was a fighter pilot in WWII, and was stationed in Japan after the war. Most of the Asian stuff was bought in that time period. I'm guessing that would be the most valuable, but you never know.

Yes the river is fishable. North of us it's petty shallow with a fair amount of rapids. Bass, bream and crappie up that way. Lots of gars and jack too. South of us it widens out and there are a lot of sloughs. All the others, plus channel, blue and flasthead cats. Around here it's known as the little river, with the Apalachicola being the big river. It's spring fed, and before the hurricane would get clear in dry weather. Damn tourist have found out about it. Tubers, kayaks, jet-ski's, the works. Luckily I'm south of the favorite get out spot. You have to put in several more hours (by tube) to get the next get out spot. Lots of boats in the summer. Not many at all since we've had it.

I was told by L. there was a canoe tangled up in the downed trees near the swimming beach. A big oak marks the beach, and I could see it from the dock, but until yesterday I hadn't been that far up the river. I had done some chainsaw work along the riverbank in that direction, but hadn't moved any of the downed trees. Yesterday I wasn't in the mood for real work, so I devoted the morning to finding the canoe and seeing how hard it would be to get it out. The finding was pretty easy. Once I had got down to the big oak, it was just where I had been told. The getting out will be a bit trickier. The river is up and there is a slough right there. I may drag it to the water and paddle out to the river and down to the house.

Here is the oak where the beach would be if the river wasn't so high.

It's not too bad, as canoes go. As long as the river doesn't get too high, it's alright where it's at for now. But the next hot day we have, I'll try to drag it to the river or slough and float it down to the house. I looked for a easy way out to the driveway, but it would take a lot of chainsawing, then there are still piles of logs out by the drive to go over or around.

I was thinking the same thing yesterday. There is two acres between/behind this land and the piece I own with my sister. If those folks would sign off on it, we could burn 1/2 a mile at once. There is the house and barn that would have to be cleared around, and an old house trailer on the other land that I used to use for a camp. But I doubt they would let me do so much at once. If I had to clear around the two acres, that is 1/4 miles off the road. I would rather let it all lay there and rot than bulldoze a path back there.

If we have another September and October like last year, it may self ignite and take the problem out of my hands.

How about offering to "let" a volunteer fire company practice wildland fire control on the property? I know of some houses that were donated to be burned down for practice...worth a try?

Not sure if that would work, but worth a try. Florida has made it where you can't burn down houses for practice. My wife's old family home in town burned, and we tried to get them to burn it the rest of the way. No go. Cost about $10K to tear it down and haul it off.
