WHAT SIZE WATER PUMP SHOULD I USE FOR A 45 GAL RESEVOIR?

I've been using this 300 GPH water pump indoors in a 20 gallon tote with no problems at all, but when I tried using it outside in my 45 gallon barrel it wasn't pumping out the water effectively at all. Should I get something bigger like a 800 gph water pump for bigger resevoirs?

Did you use a different hose when you switched? I really dont think the pump knows how big the container is unless you have some crazy new fancy pump that senses it's surroundings and just doesn't like big barrels

Yeah indoors I was using this black thin hose that I got from my local hydro store, but outdoors I'm using a green heavy duty garden hose but I dont get why the hose would be the problem

Bigger hose more water to push.....I promise you the size container doesn't matter

The size of the hose will def make a difference. But also how high you are pumping it will also make a big difference.

A bigger hose on the outlet won't reduce flow. It may appear to be less because that pump out of a 1/2" hose will have more pressure than through a 1" hose but the 1" hose will flow more water. The only thing that will reduce the flow is if your head height increases or you reduce the outlet pipe.

I'd still get a bigger pump. I usually like a pump that can empty my reservoir in less than 5 minutes after head losses so in your case 6-800gph would be what I would look for.
