A breeding?

Ok I think I’m getting the fundamentals of growing a marijuana plant... and it has been an adventure.. Never knew so much went into rollin a joint...

Now I’m ready to try a breeding program with a couple plants I have...
If you take 2 strains that others have bred and combine them to-come up with your seeds..How do you as the breeder of the new seeds get the credit... do you have to work the seeds for generations...If I pop a pack of say 10 seeds, and find my male.. then my female and breed them is this now my line..can I name it... all the genealogy of the parents will be documented to give credit..

How does one start his personal line... not just breeding seeds?

As soon as you make the first cross it’s yours. It’s just nobody will really care because anybody can do this. Seed companies do this all the time with elite genetics. It called an F1 cross. F1 crosses offspring are typically highly variable unless you are using inbred genetics so you must “pheno hunt” your keeper(s).
Respected breeders may work a line for years growing thousands of plants to capture the traits desired. Research the story or the Cinderella 99 breeding program it was a real deal breeding program.

Nobody actually ever gets credit for anything unless you end up with something so good and unique that people are willing to pay lofty sums for your beans. There are no legal standards for naming a strain and anybody with a grow space can make seeds. If lineage is known you can replicate a strain and many seed sellers already do this.
If you take strain A and cross it with strain B you've made an F1 cross. Imo you don't get to name it because it is just a cross...A x B. You can call it AB or BA but I think both parents name must be in there. That's the only real credit the original breeder ever gets. Now if let's say you grow out the seeds from A x B and select a boy and girl to continue the line. This is an S1 hybrid; the first generation of a crossed strain. Not an expert but I read that in order to stabilize the genetics from here you need to backcross the S1 genes by growing out 100 plants in order to recognize every possible phenotype and then select the new parents.
If the world legalized tomorrow you might see a thousand lawsuits filed as breeders try to protect proprietary genetics. It's still like the Wild West at this point so you can aspire to be the Arthur Morgan of growing weed. That is until the corporations get a chokehold on it....

Crossing plants of the same strain would create an F2 of the same strain (or F3, 4, etc.). Most breeders only sell F1s. You can get in on the cash if you find a keeper Male and then buy elite clones to breed to. It's not true breeding but just the way of the world these days. I have my own breeding projects going, but I'm a nobody pollen chucker. I think I'll share seeds when I'm done

Thanks guys for all the help given...
I think I’ll have some fun andvtry to come up with some seeds if my own...
I’ve got some Schwaggy Seeds Skunky Va’s that are frosting my whole tent UP!!!
This grow I actually got lucky and planted 2 seeds which where both female... lucky for me not to get males and kill them before I collected any pollen...
I have a list of females that I wil attempt to branch breed to... still want some smoke off the trees...some in the chem family some will not be...

If you grew the plants, they are your seeds. Do with them as you may.

The problem I ran into was all the good names are taken. I have a strain that is a backyard chunk from a friend of mine. Grapish x Donkey Kong. Grape Ape, right? Perfect name, but it's taken. Gorilla Grape is just about as good, but it's taken too. After much thought, I clicked on Goggle Translate and came up with Gorille de Raisin.

There's a different between being a true breeder and some run if the mill pollen chucker..What a real breeder does...is breed plants with the intention of stabilizing traits and qualities of those plants..So..when his/her seeds are planted the offspring are very close to being the same at least for the desired number of qualities ..Plant structure, indica, sativa, hybrid, cannabinoid profile, environmental triggers, calyx to leaf ratio, amount of resin, terpenes, trichome densities, auto vs photo...
The creation of Homozygous traits...both dominant and recessive is important...
Chucking pollen is a far cry from breeding..read up on Mendel and his breeding of peas to get a glimpse of what you need to know..Not only that, it will take a good two years..4-5 generations anyway..to nail down multiple traits
Good luck

This is what I want to here.. I take it.. it’s about like breeding dogs...same concept.. thanks this is clear admit gets...the biggest problem I face is only being able to grow so many at a time.. not trying to sell anything but only hoping to put something together I like and make it better as I go along..
I figure since no seed is alike, I can pick selectively for the visible traits & test from there...As with the hounds, I won’t make a breeding unless I figure I’ll like and it complements each other... I most definitely will study more as well as ask questions..

Pollen chucking and true breeding are two different things BUT if you wanna do something legit then you need to first produce a strain thats impressive and people want. A start might be a grow journal showing you shotgunning a hundred of your beans to show how stable they are and what quality and yields look like. If you can't shotgun 100 plants then forget about marketing your products.

I'd advise if you're going to breed, breed for yourself and your own interest as a hobby...
Let's be honest...the hybrid market is absolutely saturated...How does one really differentiate themselves from the plethora of decent breeders with established reputations...Unless you've got something distinct new or different...(ie..unique cannabinoids, terpenes or landrace strains) your at a serious disadvantage.

Cheers

This is strictly a hobby grow for myself.. and hopefully learn and save... I’ve probably got 200-250 seeds I’ve purchased...surely if there is anything special hopefully I’ll find it..
I think I mislead everyone, I’m not trying to be a breeder but rather learn how to breed correctly if that makes since...sorry for the misrepresentation of my original thoughts...

This is my problem. I have made far more crosses than I can really work like they should be. I will grow a few of each, and breed the best looking ones, but there is no way I can spend a whole season on just one strain. Or pop as many as would be needed to really look for that golden bean.

But it's a fun hobby, and beats buying seeds.

Since lots of you are here. I have i questiin. It's rather dumb when i think of it. But i've shown these seed a while back in the hope of haveing a goid male.. So every 2 weeks i'd put some in flowering and would usolate male that would show signs. And i was hoping for the best structural growth to be a female since it show no signs of been males lu e others did.. Anyway after months a was down to my last two. And turn out the were both males. So i killed all males and kept the champion. My only probleme... Since its not in flowering right know.. And the stronger female (for inbreed) us 3 weeks in flowering.

If i put a clone in flowering will it flower fast enought for me to breed these two . Or should i clone some of the bottoms branches ank kept make and female cline in veg and flip it later...

Anyway. I'm asking. But i'll be cloning both the male that will remain in veg (for pollen) and female that is flowering (to revedge) and will throw a pair in vedging and one in flowering (breeding aquarium tank for pollenisation) . And i'll selectivly select the most imature bud on plant aswell ti breed. I'just hate to miss the chance to inbreed this selection. Has i wasen't expecting last two plants in the trial to also be males.. But atleast i'm more then happy with the male..

This is the male in question that showed sign way later picture almost 2 months ago. Now its bigger. Branches are double size of went fro 1 leaflet to 3 blade leaft and skipped right away to 7 overall plant trunk is bigger also. But at this spoint i've pruned it and topped it to keep it low and have good shoots to clone when i want to breed. But that just to show why i've selected this male over the rest. And the las picture you can see it the smallest one in the lot ( top right of the seedling two mounts ago)

My first planned attempt at breeding my own plants to make my own seeds..
I will start with some landrace genetics..My Soar seeds ( Columbia Red x Old Mother Ghani) x (Mexican Acapulco Gold)... Soar is from Bodhi which is 50/50 hybrid.. The Acapulco comes via a friend that took a vacation and brought them back to me.. lucky me...
I simply chose this because they are as rare as I could find.. also these made skunk.. please chime in... as I start this I will keep a journal.. gonna finish up my other projects I have... I would like to get some seeds off what I have going..(Lucky Charms, Rosetta Stone XX, Ghost Town, Citrus Milf & some Strawberry Unicorn!!! I want the landrace genetics first tho..
