2nd grow: Kumaoni (Nepalese) Landrace outdoor. FIM, top?

First post!

I've been working on an outdoor/natural cycle grow here in San Diego county. I bought some Kumaoni Nepalese landrace seeds from Real Seed Co. as I was interested in some heritage weed.

Being more of a hands off/let nature take its course grower, I only just started reading into FIMing, topping, and stressing. It seems like people start this pretty early. My plants taken off in a vertical way (5.5-6ft). The internodes on this landrace are naturally really large and bamboo-y, but still I'm wondering if it might still be possible to urge the plants to bush out a bit to increase yield.

I hear differing opinions about topping and FIMing outdoor plants. Here is a pic of one of the plants. I put the sprouts in soil on April 1st.

You're growing outside so no space problem. Let it grow it will double in size(depending upon pot size).

Answering your question, if it isn't into flowerig yet then you may top it but won't make any difference this late.

I topped twice/thrice. Similar landrace sativa from Indian Himalayas.it looks like this

I'd prep a spot and get that out of the pot and directly in the ground or at least a much bigger pot. I think you still have time to top that if you don't want it getting too tall and it will get big.

I'm glad to see someone else growing landraces. I have a pack of Kumaoni from The Real Seed Company but haven't started any. 2 of the pictures on their website for this strain were taken up here in Oregon. Probably Grant's Pass / Medford area.

The one issue that you might run into could be good or bad depending on what you're doing as far as growing and or making your own crosses. Since everything from The Real Seed Company are regular seeds you could end up with a male plants. It's not necessarily a bad thing if you want to use the pollen but if you're wanting just bud then it's the end of the line with no reward with those plants.

Anyway, keep updating this thread. Looking forward to seeing a Kumaoni outdoor grow.

I'm fairly certain they are females! I should actually check again today. I took out one that was a male Lebanese landrace. I saw those pics from Oregon, super cool.

I'm growing in a San Diego location that's similar lattitude and elevation to the Kumaoni region, though far less humid here in the Summer (dry inland California desert weather in the Summer).

I was hoping I could leave the plants for 4-6 days at a time without watering as I live in LA. Think that's possible, or better to get an irrigation rig set up?

---My thoughts exactly. I wanted to keep them in pots until I could ascertain the sex, and then have option to cross, which I'm not sure I'll do yet. Though I do have one Lebanese male... don't know the first thing about crossing.

I wasn't sure if it was too late to transplant the trees from the pots to the ground... think this would be a benefit?

Mine started blooming at 6ft. Last year in a 9 Lt. Pot. Had to cut it down . But this time I have tamed the beast. You can remove the smaller nodes on the bottom. You'll get better buds. Also start giving them 13 hour darkness to start flowering. They might go as long as 3 months in flowering.

Djn what a cool looking strain I like what you have going. 15 gal is nice but a 30 gal would really give it space to be what it can be. A bunch of work but worth it you will give it 2x the root space and less watering frequency.

It would go through the roof in a 30 gal pot !
Ive seen it growing wild in India. Some of them were 12-15 ft. Tall.

These sativas are perfect for 12/12 from seeds. Would still reach 6-7 ft.

Thanks! I replied to you earlier but the message is being held up for some reason — not sure if you saw it.

Exactly, I actually put them in pots initially cuz yup Real Seed Co doesn’t sell feminized and I wanted to wait to ascertain the sex and separate to maybe cross later.

It looks like they are all females except for a Lebanese I also got from them, so I may take your advice and put them in the ground.

It's hard to grow these strains inside in a tent so you have to plan your grow. They get big. I was planning on making another order of seeds from RSC but then Covid hit and I didn't want to deal with shipping delays and the unknown. When things calm down there's another 6 - 9 strains I'm probably going to get from them. Genetics are being lost daily. Get them while you can.

Damn! Way cool. The one’s in my pic are the Johaar. They took off like crazy immediately but all the ones that survived were females. I had a little more trouble with the Lebanese getting going and only ended up with one male and a couple more tbd. I could try to shake something up between the Johaar and the Lebanese to get some seeds I guess...

You have Johaar and Lebanese growing as well as Kumaoni? That's great. I have some Lebanese seeds from ACE that I'm going to use for some crosses I have planned for the next year or so. I want to use the Lebanese due to it's high CBD and semi-auto flowering traits.

You're in a much better growing climate than I am. I can't grow and finish most of these strains outside so I'm forced to try and manage these beasts inside in a tent. It's challenging but can be done.

Ah! Maybe got me there. I actually just have the Lebanese and the "Johaar," which are also Kumaon region, correct me if I'm wrong! I thought they were Nepalese for some reason but they may be Indian (though close to the border of Nepal). So yep I have 4 big Johaar's going and a few Lebanese that are on their way (though they haven't done as well).

It seems like a great climate here. I initially bought the Lebanese because the climate is very very similar to where I am. Both regions are very similar lattitude and altitude, temps as my location. The only thing is the valleys in Northeastern Kumaon tend to get a ton of humidity from June-August, whereas here we get a dry spell during those months.

If not that... peat or something for water retention? I'm going to set up a drip timer set to water every 3-4 days. Pretty dry out here.

I always think it's worthwhile to make your own seeds. Even if you don't want to make crosses it's worth it to use 2 clones, reverse one, and then make your own feminized seeds instead of continuously buying them.

If you want to make a cross the first thing I would do is isolate the male and collect the pollen. If you have space indoors and some kind of light that would be ideal. It doesn't take much light once they start releasing. You can even cut off the branches, put them in water, and collect the pollen on a plate. I do that in a spare bedroom on a nightstand. Outside once that pollen starts flying you can't control it and you'll pollinate everything and possibly plants of other growers half a mile or more away.

As for prepping the soil to plant directly in the ground, several people I know just mix a couple bags of FFOF and Happy Frog in with the ground soil. Compost is always good. Still others just use huge pots and fill them with soil. Either way works but you're definitely going to want more space for the roots. Those plants are going to be huge by the time harvest comes around.

Dang! That’s really cool. I wasn’t aware you could reverse the sex and work that way. I have this lonely Lebanese male I don’t know what to do with now... don’t want to keep it outside for fear of pollinating fems later... sacs are still green and no pollen but I should prolly make a decision soon... maybe I’ll start a little breeding room. I’m becoming more involved than I anticipated... Don’t think I have the light to push it to pollen indoors though...

Took your advice and just bought some Sun Gro stuff (they were out of the FF) to mix with the soil. Worked great! Plants loved getting outta
