Gavita 1000w DE vs LED

I would like to see a comparison side by side if anyone can point me into the right post as I can't seem to find one. I am leaning towards LEDs (been saying it for a couple months now, just haven't bit the bullet yet)

Saying LED is a wide spectrum of lights

Blurple?
White lights?
Osram?
Samsung?

I started with HPS, too hot for where I live
Tried a couple blurple LED, did fine
Then I went with QBs, white light Samsung diodes..... All I use now
Hlg and budgetled for the win

Hey bro thanks for the reply! Def not Blurples, basically any good LEDs just want to see side by side comparisons. As I'm currently running 1000w De gavitas and want to switch away from these. (I believe in technology if that makes sense lol)

Look into the QBs then

No side by side but the QB are a lot better than HPS , more efficient, cooler, better canopy penetration, better part, and the Samsung diodes are the top technology now

It is difficult to run a proper side by side because you need to run warmer temperatures with LED to get your optimal leaf surface temperatures without the infrared.

Quality LED will perform. You might checkout @DoubleAtotheRON he has some good journals with his QB's.

Ya I saw his journal it's pretty fire. I might have to buy 1-2 to play around it with it.

If I was building out a new grow right now and LED was in the budget I would be looking at the HLG 650r. Right now I am running DE's and they still work lol. I would love the lower power bill and less heat in the summers but it's harder for me to justify a change out than just going LED from the beginning.

Ill tell you my story a few months ago which I wish I documented on here.

Ive been growing with DE HPS ( both veg and bloom) only since I started.

I ran a side by side in my veg only room a few months ago with an Alibaba QB 550 vs my 1000w DE HPS Gavita which I always dim down the knob to 600w in veg. Its a blue spectrum 6000k 1000w DE veg bulb. Both 4x8 tables. 2 lights on each table.

Temps ran 76-82 with co2 supplementation. I wanted it hot for LEDs but not too hot cause I still had DE HPS in the same rm.

Long story short they were about the same results. Except one light was pulling ~250w from the wall (QB light intensity was so powerful I had to dim it down to 50%) the other ~600w. I veg 24 hrs and live in an area where electricity tiers get expensive real fast so its quite a bit of savings for me.

I blew up my whole veg room with QBs afterwards and Im very pleased. I can go more in depth about my results in the side by side comparison if people are interested.

Ive ordered Meijiu Alibaba Bar lights and Im going to do a side by side with my 1000w DE HPS it in my flower room when it comes. If it outperforms my DE then Ill blow up my flower rm with it. Same story... hot temps for LEDs but not too hot cause I still have my DE HPS in the same rm. co2 supplementation.

Note I have 10ft ceilings so I dont have the most ideal height for DE HPS but Ive been growing with them for years so I make it work.

I would suggest a fixture with strips for your grows.
Both you and @DoubleAtotheRON run big rooms with aisles.
With strip fixtures you can hang your lamp lower and thus have less loss of light.
Also a more even spreading of the light and better penetration.

Will you do the test in separate rooms?

cant. I just have 1 big flower rm. itll literally be a side by side comparison. Same temps as the hps...same nutes.. same co2. Ill keep temps at low 80s which is what I already do with my DEs. I think that should be hot enough for LEDs.

Still will follow your test (if you do a growjournal or something like that)
But for a true test, 2 rooms would be better, because then you can run each room in a setup that matches the light.
But still... interesting test and the outcome will give you a good insight.

My electricity rate is pretty low here. I would like to hear more! Very interesting. How would you compare the growcraft x6 1000w vs the meiju? Thank for taking the time to tell your experience very much appreciated.

I personally don't like having to run a light close to the canopy. Requires too much moving of lights. Hang em high and light the whole room and fill it with plants.

But you do have aisles, right?
Are you not afraid to waste to much light? Shining at 'nothing', only the concrete floor?
It hits the sides of the plants in the next row mostly. It's important or I would need more side lighting. I get about 400 umols at the side of a row in the aisle without side lighting just from the lights above the next row over.

If I was running a really big room I would use rolling benches and flood and drain, all the trays can be rolled together and no light hits the floor, roll one row to the side to get between them, then the next, and so forth and when done roll them all back tight. Lights hung high, hitting plants from all angles. The only area of inefficiency in that style setup is the perimeter of the room, so its best for larger rooms.

What I do to maximize the light, is after doing all my chores, I’ll pull the tables closer together. One day I shift all to the right, next day all center, next day all left. That way they get even light. Kinda like light movers, but you’re moving the trays instead of the lights (much easier). Is there going to be some wasted light?, sure. But not that much. Largest bill I have ever had during a 18/6 cycle for 30 days was $678, and that includes my residence.
