I just witnessed some far right boogaloo, right here in a small town in Canada of all places, rant to a City Council meeting and I needed to rant back somewhere as I was working at the time and couldn't speak out. Fucking Hawaiian aloha shirt and everything.
So, I've seen plenty of bigotry and regressive thinking around here, its not common but it happens, mostly out of ignorance and stereotyping I want to say, but definitely a few racists around. never seen anything like this. It was a bit of a shock that this guy was so bold and outspoken and outrageous, especially at a city council meeting broadcast on local tv. And I've seen some city council rants before. It's got me thinking, how bad is this? This guy used his public speaking time on downtown graffiti removal spending to rant about some sort of "Soros/Marxist/Negro" conspiracy to destroy society, which are of course tied to the recent BLM demonstrations somehow. I've never felt threatened by terrorism, or gangs, or druggies or protests but this stuff actually worries me. Its absolutely nuts. Recently we had that Qanon guy try to storm the PMs residence and there's a few other incidents involving far right people in the military and other hate crimes in Canada over the past few years. Hate crimes have been on the rise in general. These people are being radicalized, becoming extremists and I can't pretend this is just an American problem anymore, this is happening everywhere and feel it's barely being acknowledged still. This is our ISIS, and it's driving the divisiveness and violence in both the US and Canada, or am I am just overreacting? I guess I'll take solace they're exposing themselves and literary wearing some dumbass uniform now that they've appropriated and ruined. Fucking racist conspiracy nuts are the root of hatred and divisiveness in society today and ruin everything. How does anyone become so indoctrinated and fucked up? Sigh, sorry long rant.

Sounds like he had a screw loose is how most people would probably think. Most aren't soaked in the trash that is filling his addled brain. there is kinda a law about this stuff and about a third of any country are assholes, in Canada they are mostly in the tory party, in America they all are in the republican party and have had an additional cultural kick in the pants. We got crazies and racist assholes here, they really have no political home though, even in the Tory party, the weren't that stupid. They also have no public voice which is why they are publicly invisible for the most part, criminal libel and hate crime laws take care of many wannabes. Policy makes a big difference, but it is a problem that has to do with individual character and is cultural and historical in its origins. It is also a national security threat to any multicultural society and this was demonstrated in America, in the future that will make a very big difference.

Lots to unpacked in your post. But I'm going to focus on this. You think the far right backlash is tied specifically to repatriating foreign fighters / jihadis? To which i would consider is a constitutional issue, not a Liberal issue at all. I'd argue this is far simpler, that regressive small minded conservatives with narrow world views are getting upset their narrow world views are being challenged more and more and society is simply becoming more progressive and open minded. They are steeped in conspiracy in order to rationalize their nonsense and misguided sense of superiority and are radicalizing themselves not unlike like some jihadis who gather in some remote desert.

Being independent and free is fine. That's great in fact, I'm totally about being self sufficient. I don't mind being identified as a Liberal, in fact I'm a card carrying one, as so many Americans fear and loath, I'm one of the people their daddy warned them about. What is a liberal, many don't really know, in the end it's about the broad sweep of historical and political progress towards the rule of law, the US constitution was the quintessential liberal document, especially the bill of rights.
