$155.
Heat won't be an issue for that space and now you can grow 2+ pounds per harvest for $155.

Or you could stick with LED and spend $1500 to get the same harvest.
Your call..
That's just not the whole picture, and just plain not true if you know what you're doing.

I built a diy led light 3 years ago for about $600 and a few hours of work building my frame. It's 600watt to fill a 4x4x6.5 foot tent and I pull 1000grams every run. Yes I paid more for my light but in 3 years never had to replace a bulb and am running 400watts less in electricity and no cooling required. I would argue total cost over 3 years my led is much cheaper. Nevermind trying to run a hps with that ceiling height, have fun.

If you have a warehouse hps makes sense, if you have a tent it doesn't, and if you have a room either makes sense but at least give real info not biased bs because you like your hps.

I have 400 W LED Hanging 2 ft below my unprotected floor joist.
Do you still advise to insulate and drywall?
Unlike that Vivosun HPS fixture, a 400w LED fixture doesn't put out enough hear to bother your house framing. What you will gain from having reflective walls, ceiling, and floor is a lot more light on your plants and the ability to maintain a "mi
Depending on where you live and the temperature range in your basement, insulation might be a good thing.

So taking outdated costs for a 600w DIY LED fixture, and figuring that you need 4 of them for an 8x10 room, and considering the increased costs for goods at the moment, at a minimum you'd be looking at $2800 - $3000 ... and that assumes someone has the time, skills, and desire to build 4 lights.

I'm thinking those "Mars bars" look pretty good at $3200

OK, my bad. A hobbyist huh? And you need an 8x10 room for personal consumption? Geez ... you must have the lung capacity of a blue whale. :)
Seriously though ... what kind of lighting did you think would cover that space?
The 2 I used did pretty good with 4 plants. I know I could do much better though.

That was 3 years ago before you had things like Meiji and kingbrite around. Today you could do that and not have to build anything. My $600 led would be as effective as that 1000watt hps. Comparing four LEDs to that one hps is not an equal comparison that's all I'm trying to point out.

That they were providing biased info based around their own preferences was the main point.

The cost of the better 600W+/- Alibaba LED fixtures, landed in the US is $700-$900. You're living in a dream world.
Here's a good Meiju fixture
Roughly $475 FOB China + $256 shipping to the US = $700 x 4 = $2800 ... and now you have to deal with China for warranty issues.

Dudes delusional, hence why I stopped responding to him after his first comment.

You picked the most expensive light they sell, included shipping and it's still a fraction of the cost of his quote of minimum 4-5k.

You made my point for me that his numbers were bs.

So much bickering and biased info. HPS and LED would both work great.

You could get 10 Kingbrite 240w for around $1500 which is 30w/sq ft. Yes bars work great but they are much more expensive, spaced out boards will work fine.

4x 1000w HPS will work fine too. Just get a proper air conditioner, and if you are limited on headroom than use air cooling as well.

I don’t get what the whole paranoia of burning a place down with HPS comes from. They have been used for decades and if you have half a brain it’s nothing to worry about. Wire a 4 light controller with some 10AWG and add a high temp cutoff. You can even mount some auto fire extinguishers to the ceiling for extra protection, regardless of what lighting you’re using it is a good idea.

Exactly, my problem is ppl giving shit numbers based in the own bias. Both led and hps work, and both are best at different situations.

You never corrected me on anything. All i said was a quote of MINIMUM of 4-5000$ is bs, its a fraction of that. Pick a non-bar, non top of the line LED and you can easily cover that for the $2000 range. I disagreed with someone who said replacing a 1k HPS would be 1500$ for a comparable its more like 5-700$, and your own numbers agree. I also said that i believe over the lifetime of using the light once you factor in power and bulb savings i honestly believe my LED is cheaper.

All your smartass passive agressive "corrections" were directed at other people.

Yeah, they both certainly have their pros and cons and any experienced grower should have respect for both. It reminds me of the never-ending debate of NA vs turbo in the car world.

Side note: Does @bk78 ever have anything positive to say? It's like 10% of actual helpful comments and 90% of raging toxic ones. You need a hug buddy?

He just has a mad hate on for anything LED. Id give 10-1 odds he got burned on a burple when LED was a fraud and cant get over it.
