I used to have an aquarium, it was so relaxing just sitting there watching the colourful fish swimming around ^_^.
I had an attempt at breeding Siamese fighter fish, ended up in a massive bloodbath. Had better success with Guppies and Neons, they're very very easy to breed.
I'd recommend getting:
Guppies - very placid, easy to keep and very easy to breed.
Neon Tetra's - very placid, easy to keep.
Plecostomus - very good for algae.
Red Tailed Black Shark - Only get one! They do fight sometimes.
Mollies - very placid and easy to breed, they come in all kinds of colours.
Siamese Fighting Fish - Never get more than 1 male(see pic), Males will fight to do the death! They're also prone to being attacked by other larger fish such as Convicts and Red Tailed Black Sharks.
Never, ever, ever get a crab if you have pipes coming out of the tank, they will escape. Every fucking morning I had to go hunting for my fresh water crab as it climbed up the pipe for my bubbler.
