:( I'm 68 yrs young,waaay back in the 70's I LOVED the Col.Gold flavor,have'nt had it since.Years ago I watched a video of a Columbian man curing his crop. He chopped the plants down at ground level and laid a bed of some kind of giant leaves and piled the plants up (I forget if there were giant leaves between the layers but he dowsed the plants with water and covered them with giant leaves.This is all in direct sunlight.At intervals uncover them Maybe turning them & re-wetting them,I think it took days to complete.I guess this process gave it that great flavor.Lately I have told this to several u-tube growers waiting for responses.Ok maybe it was just a dream,but I don't think so.I watched the recent Strain Hunters vids about Columbian growers but did"nt see it there:mad::wall:
Someone please enlighten me.

Soil, strain and environment dictated the drying process

Better methods developed ... it wasn't the cure but the entire scenario

Not everything was better in the good old days. Just because dudes in Mexico used to dump coca cola on their bricks doesn't mean we should do it today. Columbian gold was a great strain, but not because of the curing process. Ace Honduras is the closest to the old Columbian Gold I've grown personally, it is well worth growing out.

how true...i remember filling a bucket with dirt from the yard growing a scrawny with puny buds feeding it miracle grow and dim light.

Funny story,in 69 i'm 16,my friend Ray picks me up in his new to him 66 GTO it was awsome,we grew up in the same hood.So he pulls out a fattie OMG thats the first time i seen weed,we smoked some for a while,,,,and all of a sudden I looked around outside while we're driving on a main street about 10 blocks from my house and I said Ray where are we,he kept laughing.I was totally STONED.it's never been that intense again,even at times when I would quit and restart as long as 7 years without.I really could'nt recognize anything.

I've grown Col Gold from World of Seeds and it was real close to high and taste of the 78 Colombian I remember. Definitely one of my favorite strains.
I bought more of the seeds and it was close but not the same as the first batch. I crossed one of the last ones with my legendary Widow plant and it's real potent. I have another batch I bought but haven't grown any out yet.
I grew this one 12/12 from seed to keep her small.

Yes it involves sweating the buds then turning an sweating more. It can be done indoor with totes an fresh bud one must be very careful not to induce mold its a fine line.

Late in flower the Santa Marta Indians would would girdle the plants a few inches above the ground. Causes the whole plant to fade to gold because nutrients were no longer able to travel up the cambium layer. You can make your own gold.
Then the curing in the sun.

I remember getting on a school bus in the early morning hours to go pick strawberries. A few of us would all go in on a 1/4 oz bag of Columbian Gold. We'd usually pay $15 and get ripped off for half of it from the person we had get it for us. Usually someones older brother. After strawberry season we'd ride around on our bikes collecting bottles and cans. You could get a joint for $1. Oregon was the first state to enact a bottle bill in 1972 creating deposit on bottles and cans. That was a goldmine for us back then and we always made enough to get a couple doobies that we'd smoke in forts we made in the woods and fields around where we lived.

I've grown World of Seeds Columbian Gold. I didn't have any problem with what I harvested. It was damn good weed. But it wasn't real Columbian Gold. Plant structure was all wrong and flowering time was much too short. I've grown pure sativas and it wasn't one. It's definitely worth growing though. I'll grow it again. I still have a pack of 10 reg seeds.

I still do that with part of the outdoor crop, not exactly that way but similar results
That's an old tobacco curing method in Maryland and VA, (like piling tree leaves in a pile in your yard), leaves get supple and leathery, light golden brown from the bacteria. I think it's anaerobic bacteria that's being cultured.
Do the same thing with sugar leaves and a couple brown paper bag, makes great rolling weed. Takes work and good moisture management, can turn to mildew easily.
Similar to Cavendish cure, a much lighter, brighter cure than malawawi cobs, which is a full Cavendish cure. Not really fermenting it extremely.
Better flavor than a cavendish, by far. Doesn't linger like stale cigar smoke.
