Why hydro?

As thread title suggests, I'm just wondering why hydroponics seem so interesting to cannabis growers. Seems like they frequently talk about going to hydro stores or stuff pertaining to hydroponic growing.

Why not just grow in dirt like with any other plant?

I switched to flood and drain hydro because it was waaay simpler. I didn’t have to move dirt in and out of my basement. I never had any pests other then a few moisture gnats in over 10 years. I mixed up my reservoir and let it do it’s thing for a couple days usually, then topped it off. Any changes I needed to make to the feed only took a short period to be effective. The longest I went on vacation was for 9 days with zero issues. I’m sure I could think of more things I liked about it, but that’s my quick 2 cents.

Most "other plants" are grown hydroponically as well in an indoor environment, not just cannabis.

Faster, bigger growth in hydro. Plus you have more control over exactly what, and how much, the plant eats.

Agreed. It's kinda why I like to do both, but the hydro is getting to be too much to keep up with.... or I'm just getting lazier. Lol

I grow in soil now, but early on when I found RIU I made systems based on the following thread. Growth rate and production with aero and aero/nft systems was significantly better than what I see in soil.

You can do it in a tent. It's just harder because of height constraints. It makes it tough to drain without gravity. I used flood trays essentially sitting on the floor with a pump to drain, but the setup was finicky and I had to mess with the drain tubes to get suction going a lot of the time. If the setup was on timers there would be a high possibly of flooding at some point.

It can. Here's my first grow in a 4x4 tent, flood and drain hydro. This was a test run. Next batch will be 6 plants or more depending on whether or not I can get some patients to cultivate for.

Its cleaner, easier to automate... and better yields.

Also... "hydroponic shop" is synonymous to "specialist weed gardening shop".... they all sell specialist soil and all the kit.

you would think a "Mars Colonist" would realize they'll be growing food on mars in hydro, not soil. lmao

Hth pool shock basic formula is your sterile friend, h202 is your more expensive fix all for root rot.

If you can keep you res temp low, that's the ideal pathogen protection.
