A Memphis woman was sentenced to six years and one day in prison for illegally registering to vote -- but the case is more complicated than it appears.

Black Lives Matter activist Pamela Moses was convicted in November of registering to vote in 2019 while on probation for a 2015 conviction for perjury and tampering with evidence, which is one of a small number of felonies that cause the permanent loss of voting rights in Tennessee, but state officials knowingly conceded to a series of errors about her voting eligibility, reported The Guardian.

“They never mentioned anything about voting," Moses said about her guilty plea nearly seven years ago. "They never mentioned anything about not voting, being able to vote … none of that."

Election officials should have removed her from the voter rolls, but the court never sent local officials the necessary documents, and Moses wasn't aware anything was wrong until she launched a long-shot mayoral campaign two years ago.

That's when election officials notified Moses, whose defamation win over a county official was overturned last year on a technicality, that her name couldn't appear on the ballot because of her felony conviction, and they discovered she had never been removed from the voter rolls.

She went to court and asked a judge to clarify whether she was still on probation, and the court confirmed that she was -- but Moses didn't believe the judge had correctly calculated her sentence.

Moses went to the local probation office to get the matter sorted out, and an officer signed a certificate stating that her probation had ended, and she then submitted that to local election officials.

However, the next day an official at the corrections department notified election officials that a probation officer had made an error on the certificate and said Moses was still serving an active felony sentence and was ineligible to vote.

Prosecutors told jurors that Moses knew she was ineligible to vote when she submitted the certificate, and the sentencing judge said she had "tricked" the probation department, but civil rights activists say voting rules are extremely complicated in Tennessee, where about 8 percent of certificates that were submitted in one 2017 study were rejected because the voters were ineligible.

“That seems absurd to me on its face,” said Blair Bowie, an attorney at the Campaign Legal Center. “The instructions on the certificate of restoration form are very clear to the probation officer or the clerk. They say you will check these records and you will sign off on this based on what the records say. They’re saying that she tricked the probation officer into filling out this form for her. That creates a really scary prospect for people who think they’re being wrongly told they’re not eligible.”

On Wednesday, CBS 42 reported that a Jewish student at a school in Mountain Brook, Alabama was rebuked and threatened by the school after he spoke out about a lesson in which he said the teacher and students were giving Nazi salutes.

Apparently, the lesson involved students learning that what became the Nazi salute was at one point used in the United States and was not seen as a symbol of white supremacy.

"'He [the teacher] explained to us that in America we used to do that before WWII and everything and then he proceeded to show us, ask us to stand up to salute the flag and he and everyone else did the Nazi salute," Ephraim told CBS 42. "I felt upset, unsure of what’s going on. Just kind of shocked.'"

Ephraim told CBS 42 that he was even more shocked when the school proceeded to reprimand him the next day for complaining.

"'They proceeded to tell me that I’m making Mountain Brook look bad for uploading the video and sharing it and asked me to apologize to my teacher, which I refused to," he said. "The day after he made our class, and our class only, put up our phones and he moved me from sitting in the back of the class to right next to him."

In a statement, the school tried to downplay their actions.

"The focus of the lesson was the meaning of symbols, how they change, and why the Bellamy Salute should never again be recognized due to its association with the actions of the Nazi Party," said their statement. "The picture and 3 second video being circulated are not representative of the lesson, what was being taught, or the context of the instruction that was occurring. Any representation that this picture or video represents a Mountain Brook teacher attempting to instruct students on how to use the Nazi Party Salute or instruct them to use the salute towards the American flag is unequivocally false. No students were asked to raise their hand for any reason."

However, the statement also said the school would work with Jewish groups to prevent misunderstandings in future.

Ridiculous. You can learn about it without having to do it.

And that last line is total bullshit. It's not the Jewish groups they need to work with to prevent misunderstandings, they understand just fine. They need to pick up a mirror and work with the meth users they see in it.

The school said that the teacher didn't tell the students to do it. But for real, what reason does the teacher have to actually do it?

The fact that at least one kid was more than happy to do it though should be enough to figure out something screwed up is going on and some real hard questions should be asked about the kid who is worried about it gets in trouble.

This is why the push to learn about the racist roots of our society is so needed.

The girls' basketball team of Derby High School had an incident recently that prompted them to share a video by Black author Dr. Joy DeGruy on the topic of white privilege.

When their principal shared the same video, however, the school board lost it, forcing him to apologize, reports KMUW.

Principal Tim Hamblin shared the video with the teachers and offended at least one faculty member, leading to a school board complaint. Hamblin was then forced to apologize to the staff for sending it.

"In the short video, DeGruy talked about going to the grocery store with her sister-in-law, who has a Black and a white parent and presents as a white person, as she has blue eyes and a very fair complexion," the Daily Beast reported about the video.

"During the store run, the cashier checked out the sister-in-law with no issue when she paid with a check. DeGruy, on the other hand, said she had to present multiple forms of identification when paying with a check," the description continues. "The cashier also double-checked to make sure that she was not on a list of people from whom not to accept checks. The situation escalated to the point where the manager had to get involved, and DeGruy’s sister-in-law called out the cashier for discrimination."

“I apologize to anyone that felt the video or its content which reference[d] white privilege made them feel uncomfortable, awkward, harassed, or that it created a hostile work environment,” Principal Hamblin said in the apology, KMUW reported.

The Kansas town of Derby has a population of under 25,000, yet it has a history of making news for racism.

Derby High School students have a history of BLM activism. In 2020 they were among few high schools in the state where nearly all of their boys basketball team took a knee during the National Anthem, the Derby Informer reported at the time.

"We did not do this because the NBA players and other pro athletes are," said Senior Blake Chadwick. “We did this because we feel that this is ultimately bigger than basketball. This was a way for us to use our voice.”

There's a history in the school of racial problems, a 2008 graduate recalled in the Derby Informer. Michelle Rico, the daughter of Brigadier General Michael Dillard, spent two years in school in Derby, and she said she was surprised by racial tensions in the school.

“I walked into the lunchroom and saw that everyone had separated themselves,” Rico recalled noting they were segregated by color. "I had never seen something like that. I was very upset, and went to the bathroom and cried about it. That was just the beginning of noticing a lot of things that would be different."

The teachers told her mother that it was always like that at Derby High School.

"No one in Derby is ever going to call someone the n-word with a hard r,” Rico said. “That’s not the type of racism people experience at Derby High School, from my personal experience.”

In 2020, Rico's father came forward talking about being Black in the town. He had years of military service but when he went to the grocery store they looked at him like he was a thief. That's the kind of casual racism that he, his daughter and other Black students, teachers and residents experience in the city.

I was trying to find the video that triggered the above story and started listening to Dr. Joy DeGruy's conversation about voting.

It is really good and eventually I looked at the youtube page and saw it was a live stream, and this 'Elevation Allah was spamming it and said some stupid shit "No, Down Ballot Voting makes NO SENSE". Which instantly got my troll detector going.

I saw that they were pushing 'New Black Media' and decided to go down the rabbit hole.

First tell, founded in 2020 and based in Tallahassee Florida. Not that it is not possible that would be a legit place to start something, but still.

Not going to call total bullshit scam just yet, because I can't access their website to see their reporting, but the snow flaking and right wing talking points on anything I have seen so far that has their name in the title/description on youtube isn't making me think they are not a right wing scam.

When promoting the Canadian truck driver protest on Sunday, Fox host Lara Trump claimed that the halting of trade between Canada and Detroit pales compared to the summer of 2020.

According to her, "cities were literally being burned to the ground" by Black Lives Matter protesters. In fact, no cities were "burned to the ground," or that likely would have made national news. There were certainly fires set. An Atlanta Wendy's was burned to the ground after police killed Rayshard Brooks in the parking lot.

In Washington, D.C., small fires were set with newspaper boxes. That week, 15 people were arrested. No buildings were burned to the ground, nor did BLM protesters ravage the U.S. Capitol building.

In Kenosha, Wisconsin, approximately $11 million in damage was done from the violence that leveled some buildings, but they were isolated to predominantly Black neighborhoods. To put that in context, the Capitol attack will cost upwards of $30 million.

A tornado outbreak across Kentucky resulted in "5,000 points of destruction in the 12 counties," said Kentucky Emergency Management director Michael E. Dossett. The estimated cost by AccuWeather "across the four states hit by the tornadoes will exceed $18 billion — much of the costs will be in Kentucky." In those cases, actual cities were leveled to the ground.

Workers in Michigan are expected to lose as much as $51 million in wages due to the Canadian trucker protest, says one estimation by the Anderson Economic Group. They are protesting the vaccine mandate, but 80 percent of the truckers have already been vaccinated.

A Massachusetts Montessori school has apologized and fired a teacher who made blackface masks for students to wear as part of a Black History Month lesson, NBC Boston reports.

The incident took place in a classroom with toddlers last Tuesday and school officials were notified after a mother heard about it from her child. "This is unacceptable and don't really understand the concept of this project," parent Nadirah Pierce told NBC Boston.

The school, ICKids, released a statement saying that the teacher "planned and carried out an activity that involved black masks 'blackface.' [sic] One of the parents brought it to our attention and was offended; The teacher apologized to the parent," adding that teacher had been "released from her employment."

The statement also addressed the earlier apology on Facebook, saying that it "was not the best statement" and that they "were trying to send a message to say that research for toddler curriculum was not executed or completed in the manner that It [sic] should have been, so we apologize to every and anyone this may have offended."

According to NBC Boston, the school's Facebook profile appears to have been deleted.

"The apology received was empty and then to go onto Facebook and see that apology was disheartening. I hope this is a lesson to possibly really prepare to do projects on cultures before doing them to avoid a hurtful gesture to a group of people," Pierce said. "Even if they weren't trying to offend, they have."

Local news outlet WCVB reported that the school has closed due to potential protests.

either way this is wrong and stupid, but i'm curious about what this teacher was trying to teach? were they misguidedly trying to teach empathy for black people and that we're all the same...just doing it in a completely asinine manner? or were they trying to impart some kind of racist message? i'm not even exactly sure what message it could have been, but when you have two or more completely stupid possiblities, how is one supposed to decide?
is it really that important to try to impart any kind of message to preschoolers except have fun with each other and be nice to each other? can indoctrination wait till at least third grade?

If nothing else it is a very good reason that the history of how racism has shaped so much of our nation should have a place in schools. And the bullshit anti-anything not white heterosexual banning of topics needs to get called out for the stupidity it is.

Because either that teacher was racist and knew the history of black face.

Or they were ignorant of it and would have benefitted from a few uncomfortable lessons in school to learn why it is so hurtful.
