so you won't read the three articles i posted that say tesla may be full of shit?....ok....believe musk, he has certainly always been completely honest and above board, no reason for him to lie...

Elon Musk is an idiot. However AI cars are much safer than human driven cars, the data is out there. Every major auto manufacturer is working on AI driving systems, why? Airplanes with auto pilot have fewer crashes, why?

I dont think there is really enough data around AI driving in the real world, but it would be safer in the future, would have to be.

Don't see myself adopting it anytime soon though, I like to fix my own stuff and am not sure a 10 minute youtube video would cover the necessary info. It's all still prohibitively expensive to me, but I'm a cheap used car person so will see what it looks like in 10 years.

Driving can be pretty fun, I wouldn't want to get away from that. Commuting sucks though, my slog across the city on the interstate, while exhilarating, is stupid. I could see the technology being used to greatly improve bus-type transit services.

I see a time in the not to distant future where insurance companies will require AI, because it will improve their bottom line. People will get used to AI, kinda like seatbelts and speed limits, they save lives.

they have a system they can put into a car if you have a problem with drunk driving. they've had it for quite a while, and no one shit themselves over it. it does require that you prove you have a problem first, before they will put one on your car, but we don't preemptively try to stop any other crimes.
the system now only checks for blood alcohol. a small camera could be added, that would make sure the right person is activating it, which is the only workaround to it i'm aware of..
are automakers going to be forced to be information collection agents for the government, or anyone else? are they going to make our vehicles tattle on us? then there is going to be a HUGE aftermarket for ways to get around that...the government will end up watching the same looped footage of one very sober guy driving very alertly, from about 50 million vehicles at a time

The ACLU wrote an article that said they have similar concerns to yours. They also said they are monitoring events as they develop. The system has yet to be developed. I support the ACLU and am glad they have alerted people to the risks they see in the bill. I have similar concerns.

I'm as skeptical as you. But there is nothing to point at and say what it is right now. All this measure does is justify funding research into regulations and hardware and software for such a system. We are three years away from even looking at what kinds of regulations will be in place, including what kinds of information will be collected, how it's stored, who can access it, etc. As we see in this thread, there are people who want this kind of system because too many still die from alcohol-disabled drivers. I'm not against research into how to protect people from drunk drivers, so, personally, I'm OK with this measure for now. You might feel otherwise,

This is all just research right now. It can save lives. OTOH, It can create yet more onerous bureaucracy. If so, nothing says we can's stop it later. I'm pretty sure the car companies don't like it. Their lobbyists will be out there spreading information too. But also dis-information written to trigger fear uncertainty and anger over something that doesn't even exist yet. Because, that's what lobbyists do.

Just curious as to the majority of peoples thoughts on the mandate included in Biden’s Trillion dollar Infrastructure package. It states that all new vehicles, starting sometime later this decade, will have passive drunk or impaired driving detection along with the ability to disable the vehicle. I don’t normally post or comment on political threads but I think things are really getting way out of control.
