That brings up a very good topic for discussion. If it hasn't already been discussed…

What's everybody's rules for leftovers? Like how long do you think what is still good for etc?

My wife is the main cooker obviously. But most stuff she won't even keep and just will pitch. Some stuff she'll go 3 days on but that's pretty strict. I don't know if that's an Asian thing from years past before Refrigeration and eating old food would kill you or make you sick lol. But she's pretty strict especially when it comes to our kid and eating leftovers.

What are y'all thoughts?

My wife's rule of thumb is a week and it gets trashed.

Making meals out of leftovers is essential, as we can't be tossing food away
My mother-in-law would save everything worth keeping at the table.
Down to as little as a tablespoon of veggies. After a few days, she had enough to use for Vegetable soup.

Having lived through the great depression, she saved "everything".

As tough is it was then, she never talked of this type of despair.

I try to cook a main dish and “recycle” it for 2 extra meals if possible, or use it for lunches the next few days. We make a lot of tacos, casseroles, rice bowls, stir fry, fried rice, and stuff that can make mystery shit disappear easily, like chili. My rule is that after 4 days, it needs to either have been eaten, frozen, or it gets tossed. Yesterdays roasted pork loin is gonna become a “pork stroganoff”, with mushroom gravy over some noodles. If there’s some pork left the next day, itl become fried rice, or I’ll saute some peppers and onions, make guac - and it’ll be fajitas. Always keep a handful of meals “in your back pocket” that can be pulled out and subbed at a moment’s notice. It makes it a lot easier then to just buy what’s on sale, and make it work somehow.

We generally give it 3-5 days in the fridge & if no taker it gets warmed up to mix in with the dog's dinner.

Awesome discussion everybody. Leftovers is something we all have in common but yet so routine not much thought goes into it.

The wife is cooking one of my favorites tonight for dinner. The infamous double cooked pork. Will take pics if I can remember.

I wish we all lived closer, so I could gift all you guys my wife's homemade spicy sauce.
