Go after some solid genetics like Night Owl or Mephisto. I can't and won't speak for others but, I have been fortunate with both breeders. Memphisto works their lines very well. Not a lot of variation, very stable.
Anyone find autos a waste of time?

One other tip for you. Look up a member on here by the name of Budzbuddha. Trust me on this one. The man has a wealth of knowledge in the world of Autos. Read some of his posts. GL!

But again, isn't the choice between the cheapest seeeds/equipment and good quality up to the grower to research? My very 1st auto grow (here in the auto section) was my 1st using bottom fed autopots, 1st time using HLG Quantum Boards and i topped them as well. I got 10.5 or so oz off of 2 plants under 1- 135 watt light. I researched and i took off. Others blame the "auto" gene and it's not that. It's growers knowledge of the plant and the effort they put in.

I see you get my point! You also loose the ability to fully dial in a strain and genetic line, because you can only run one cycle.
Why people choose to grow Autos is mostly a result of lack of education and marketing. It's way more money in selling Auto seeds.

I was referring to the OP. If you grow a strain called Holy Bananas by donkey dick seeds you’re probably gonna end up with trash.
Choose a respectable breeder and chances are on your side of getting what you want.
I’ve grown a good 30-40 autos and only 1 of them was bunk. Looked good but no smell and a bland high, sherbet by seedstockers. Chances are if I grow it again it’ll be good.
That’s another factor with autos, always has to be from seed. Same with photoperiods barring clones. You can get a dodgy phenotype but again those chances come down to the breeder!
Mesphito are the best for stability. Rocbud, fastbuds and Dutch passion have faired well in my experience. If you can get it Rocbud Slurricane is worth a grow if u want to chance your mind about autos and potency. Some of the most potent weed I’ve consumed!

I travel quite a bit. If I'm off the road for 3 months I grow autos. There's no way I can finish a photo in that time frame. Just posting that for those who don't see a reason to grow autos indoors. They are smaller also and take up less space. There are all kinds of reasons people prefer autos.
If you pick the right genetics and if you are patient with the learning curve, you can grow really good stuff.

I'm 62 years young and don't want to be moving 5 or 7 gallon fabric pots full of water or feed. But me likie getting the buzz on and growing as well. Everyone has their reasons.

You seem very knowledgeable on this topic! Do all autos still have ruderalis? Or have they figured out a different way to auto flower? If they still have ruderalis in their genetics, If the right things line up I see no reason why you couldn't get crap ass ruderalis phenos. I'm sure we can all agree grower knowledge or effort has little to do with recessive phenotypes popping up

I am no expert...but my understanding is that autos are still being developed, and the improvements over the last 10 years have been huge. I don't think anyone would deny that. And if the improvements over the next 10 years are anything like the past 10....conversations like this one will be moot. That's just my take.
Also...if we're being fair...photos have been around a lot longer, so it makes sense there are a ton more choices and quality because they have decades of development behind them.
Are photos better? on average....they probably are...although I would put some Mephisto stuff against any photo. For my needs, companies like Mephisto check all the boxes.

One thing I notice with most autos is that the flower doesn't really finish like a photo. Very rarely do you see photos of autos before harvest with big full swollen bracts and receded hairs. And also the bud to leaf ratio is never looks that good.
There may be exceptions and I have seen some meph strains with a better ratio. But it definitely seems like a common trait in the autos I've grown and the photos I've seen. Seems like it's a genetic thing or maybe most just chop autos early.

So every bad grown auto(and their are alot) are solely on the genes and we all KNOW it huh? This is why there are bad auto growers and you gotta now research members before you actually waste the time.

Nice, but i refuse to believe i got the EXACT lucky genetic seed every time I've grown autos and the only time I've gotten 1.5 ft tall plants were in 2 liter perlite hempys. My history will show i had to ask wtf was a dampened off seed last year. I tought myslef by reading and like i said, even with tons of new variables, rocked my autos right out of the gate. 9/10 I'm sure the genetics in question might be different, but that's growers choice. Nobody can blame me they smoked their bobby brown, watched Scarface and decided to buy miracle grow and cool man sams donkZy x cookie on "sAlE" and they get 1 cola 8" autos. Those aren't bad though for sure.

Yep. Don't think I've ever seen an auto that didn't have yellowing/spotting leaves towards the last half of flower. This really is just poor genetics that make them difficult to feed and keep healthy for the entire grow.
