i believe almost all plants survived transplant into the system now at least. They are all looking acceptable for now.

I am planning to begin using the lucas formula, but I have a problem. What is this 500ppm @.7 conversion thing I keep seeing. What is the .7 conversion part? 70% nutrient strength? and .5 is 50% nute strength? If thats the case then what does he mean by adding back 100% nute solution when he does not list one. He also mentions using 50% of the normal nute load for younger plants...sooo does he mean 50% of the .5 conversion (50%) aka 25% total! HAHAHAHA THIS IS DUMB! why not just say 600ppm , which is using 50% of the recommended dosage. Or am I completely missing something?

it appears i was completely wrong...I will assume my meters run at a .7 conversion unless someone informs me otherwise.

equal parts of GH 3 part 500ppm. Why would you flood LESS often with smaller plants?

You are using rockwool it holds a lot of water so it doe not need to be flooded much at all. Larger plants can go through lots of water and often need to be flooded more often.

negative...3 yrs and no rockwool ever used. I use rapid rooter cubes. they dry out much quicker.

I must just be super high when i talk to you. Someone else was talking to me about an ebb and flo and he was using rockwool. Yeah rooter cubes dry out fast.

John I figured out a good way to find the perfect dry time. I used to have my timer set on 3 hours and 50 minutes of dry. After investigating the pebbles 20 minutes before the pump came on I noticed that all the pebbles were still soaked beyond a inch down...This is why my roots were dying.

New growth, You have suggested that my timings may be adequate, but as I said above that was not correct.

The main question I have been asking here is what should my dry time be and how long should I flood for.

I have discovered that the length of flood time is fairly non important....soak the whole cube if you want to, just dry them adequatly.


WHAT DRY TIMES DO PEOPLE RUN WITH PEBBLES?!?! Im not looking for a "Yeah that looks good man" ...beacuse the plants are still dying so its not good.

SHOULD I EVEN CONSIDER 5 HOUR DRY TIMES 6 HOURS mebe even just twice a day like rockwhool?

Currently I flood up to the bottom of the cube and let them dry for 4 hours and 15 minutes. Pots are standard 5" x 5", which many people use. Just assume my environment is normal as well. Aka temp=75 humid =40-50%

They use less water. Don't want to cause root rot, drying promotes downward root growth.

By the way for any of you new flood guys using 5" x 5" containers in pebbles. I am still experimenting with the flood times. I have discovered that my dry time is still too LITTLE! I was very surprised by the ability of hydroton (porous rock/clay chunks) to hold water for so long. If it has an inch of pebbles above it, pebbles can stay moist for at least 5 hours now for sure in 5x5".

When plants mature timing needs to be changed to around every 3 1/2 hours flood bc roots r absorbing so much. No wonder my plants were getting overwatered. (watering every 2-3 hrs) Also, with rapid rooters plugs it is not as important to flood BELOW the cube because they are not as esasily saturated as RW. I plan to flood about 1/4 inch below the cubes next time after discovering pebbles will wick about 1/2" .
