Too much foliage... Trimming Question

Hey guys... I have 36 plants in a 4x4 area and they are kinda growing into each other. Is it ok to cut off fan leaves? I just want to expose as many bud sites as possible. Is there a way to go about this? I won't use the paperclip or tucking method. There's just too much to work with and it always proves to be a bitch. Other times I've grown I've just let it grow. I feel like i've sacrificed yield by not exposing all budding sites. Any info on the matter is appreciated, thanks.

if u do make cuts dont cut to much try to tuck some if u can and try to cut just the bottom half of ur plant dont go to high and if u do not to much at all but i do make cuts on occasion and it does make the bud sites bigger in my opinion

Its just I'll have one huge ass fan leaf on a plant that is blocking a hole cola of another plant... Problem is that fan leaf I wanna get rid of looks as though its a conductor for it's own bud site and I feel I might be harming it if I cut that leaf off. At the same time I feel like why not cut it off so I can get another bud site or to exposed by getting rid of it and maybe it'll use new growth to develop a new fan leaf. I dunno, big fan leafs look important, but cover too much area. :/

Don't cut off fan leaves, think of fan leaves as digestive organs. Buds are reproductive organs. The fan leaves catch the light to convert it into sugars for the plant to grow those buds you desire.

You can no more digest with a reproductive organ than you can reproduce with a digestive organ.

thats funny cuz i've cut off fan leaves b4 and my plant was digesting just fine haha..we dont care what u HEARD i hear that bs all the time most ppl dont know squat tho..as long as u dont cut off a shit load of fan leaves ur fine ur good ur cherry no worries acuna matata

+rep well spoken good sir... I know you can trim plants just trying not to be too eager. A lot of times keeping up with trimming can help A LOT. I'm the same way with people saying DONT. It aggravates the fuck out of me that people respond to stuff that they have never even tried themselves. Thanks for all your help HomeGrown.

The bud part of marijuana is for reproduction, the pistals sole purpose in life is to catch pollen to create seeds. Pistals can not receive light to produce sugars for growth, only leaves can do that. Cutting off fan leaves and relying on bud leaves only is like giving your plant gastric bypass surgery. The buds will still grow somewhat, but you are cheating yourself out of quantity.

Where is your scientific reason for cutting them off? So the buds (which can't turn light into food) can get more light?

He never said cut off all your fan leaves, but rather just the ones that are obstructing other bud sites. Even if you cut off a fan leaf, the plant will grow and develop new fan leaves from my experience. I'm just wondering about the big ones that really block out stuff. If you remember one things about growing marijuana, remember this... It's just a weed and weeds will grow well if you simply take care of them.

dude he's not ganna cut off all the leaves just a couple..i think ur getting confused sir.. check out my pics..i cut fan leaves off on occasion usually a week or 2 before i flower but only if they look like crap and/or in a spot i dont like

either way yes you can cut somoff but not more then 10% of the fan leaves. like the other person said the leaves catches, ( stores ) the light to grow your buds bigger.

If you're tucking the fan leaf out of the light is producing that much energy? or is it using more than it is producing because it doesn't have access to the light energy anymore? Interested to hear someone's take on that because it lends itself to this argument. I have done both not trimmed and trimmed the bottom third of my plant. The trimmed plants had a larger main cola but no side shoots. As they say in Vegas it is a push.

I'm just trying to help you learn how a plants biology works. There is a reason for the fan leaves.

yeah its better to cut off some of those big leaves that are blocking stuff from the light, the older leaves that have lots that fresh look are not producing sugar like they used to thats why they look old, if it bugs you to cut them off then you can always cut off a blade or 2 or cut half the leaf that way its still there

First off when you assume, you simply show your own ignorance. I'm actually a horticulture major graduating next semester. I understand the definition of a weed. If you look at it in its appropriate context, you can see that I'm right. Weed (marijuana) got it's name because it would grow wild anywhere seeds might have been dropped and prove to be a strong growing plant regardless of different growing environments. Weed is not hard to grow, there are just different opinions as to how to optimize a plants performance. Aside from saying that though, the plant will usually grow if you are taking care of it appropriately. Stop being ignorant and assuming you are an all knowing source of information.

haha get em tiger..dude thinks he's teaching us something cuz he went to school and studied plants haha, what he doesnt know is i went to a grow class at a local cannibas club and they even trim their plants.. and i remember my first grow i trimmed one plant and let one grow w/out trimming the one i trimmed had big old buds on em and the one i didnt had alot of bud sites but they wernt as big as the one i trimmed

yes sir i did back in high school. and a pot plant is a lot like a rose plant as to pruning and thinning out to get the best and biggest flowers, ( buds ) im not saying murder the bitch but its up to the grower and their circumstances are but yes you can of you want to.
