I grow outdoors... the question being in a weed friendly state such as cali, why don't you?

If you grow 100 plants indoors that gives you $4000 to play with. Plenty of dough to produce. Your equipment is an investment but it keeps on giving once set up.

On the first note there, California being a weed friendly state has just led to tens of millions of extra federal dough spent on eradication, the most spent on any state, mostly of outdoor crops. Then figure in that an undeveloped half acre just about anywhere in Cali costs about the same as a whole city block in the midwest these days, so, growing outdoors here is both risky and quite an initial investment unless you just happen to inherit a freaking rancho.

On the second note, I don't think I would charge $400 an ounce even if I was in a state where that was normal. $400 an ounce would actually make me feel like a criminal. Prices here are $230-250 for a potent medical strain, very occasionally reaching $300 for OG Kush or Sour Diesel or some flavor of the month.

Top that off with it costing a lot more than $40 a plant indoors. I'm not trying to pick on you man, but suggesting we make 1000% profit is like nonsense you would hear from the drug czar to rant against pot. A commercial grower with 2000 outdoor plants might make that, but most of us, the majority trying to make this as legit as growing lettuce, don't grow that much or charge that much. Even a greedy bastard charging $400 an ounce wouldn't come near 1000% profit indoor.

P.S. I'm curious, what state are you from, or if that's to specific what region? I ask because I've visited friends in AZ, FL, MI and NY and the most any of them payed was $350, in NY, for some very decent chemdawg.

Apply that to say bread, which if it was a buck in the 70's would be 100 bucks now. Yes there are other variables at work, but weed is clearly overpriced, not just because it is illegal (it was illegal in the 70's), but the market is willing to bear the pricing. Even if you cut it in half....500% is quite outrageous, since most businesses work on a net of about 8-10%...some far less. If weed is to enter the business world, you should be prepared to profit about 10%, which is much closer to business models.

As I've posted elsewhere, it is the huge profit which makes weed such a target for LEO. In the end the profits drive the prosecutions.

$100 a quarter seem pretty common around here as well but you can get an ounce for $300-$350. I agree though if they do make growing legit the profit margins with drop as they should. People growing for sale now would probably have to double or triple their output to make up for the taxes to the gov and the drop in price.

Some areas dont have brick weed. I can literally get a pound of shwagg for $100 more then I pay for a ounce of really good smoke. No offense but older people will have a much easier time getting the good stuff because the low quality is mainly controlled by thugs and gangsters at least in my area.

Cali. is trying to move weed into a business model. The current prices are unsustainable. That's a FACT. Weed is a target because of the outrageous profits, that's a FACT.

Big Oil operates at about 8-10% net profit, but I'll stick with the upper for you folks who aren't good with math.
At 10% profit gas is about 2 bucks a gallon. Now apply the profit margin of weed's current 500% (I'm being more than fair). A gallon of gas would be 100bucks a gallon. Oh how you would HOWL!!! And yet you complain if YOUR profit margins are affected and brought down to a REALISTIC margin.

his point is still valid(flylikeaneagle). There are levels and quality difference, the brick weed that is around now can more easily be compared to the weed in the 70's then the premium weed that we are growing. In the 70's they didnt have the extreme difference in quality that we have now.
the stuff that was a buck in the 70's is more like $45 now. So its nowhere near the 1000% you speak of. Its more like 40-50(400-500%) times the price it was in the 70's.

Even if they come out with "new and improved" products you still have the option of buying that old school generic crap for a lot less

I will not go so far as to claim all his math is correct but in general he was more accurate than you.

He clearly mentioned Colombian Gold and you came back call it 70’s schwag. Well I can tell you as being that I started getting high in either 1868 or 1969 that Colombian Gold was not schwag and would not be considered schwag if true landrace Colombian Gold were to be compared to any strain today.

To be blunt I laugh at the young clown shoes of today who need to believe that they have vastly better pot to smoke than was available in the past. It just isn’t true.

My brother in law brought home two very large speakers filled with a landrace sativa, Dalat I believe it was, when he returned from Vietnam and I have never to this day smoked anything that was as incredible as that was and I have smoked most everything.

I have access to the very same pot that is supplied to a number of Hollywood stars and producers and directors and studio big shots and others like them and you have to believe they only buy the best and that is not better than what my brother in law brought back from Vietnam and I would not say for sure that it is better than any landrace sativa I smoked in the 60’s and 70’s.

Most people today do not get high, they get stoned. The old 60’s and 70’s sativas had a Bugatti Vyron-like high, it was fast and racy and it was incredibly soaring and clear-headed and motivational.

Now people smoke stuff that numbs their mind and body incapacitating them and it glues their butt to the couch and gives them a case of the munchies that is so powerful that they eat an entire cow followed by six burrito supremes and wash it down with four Big Gulps and they say ‘wow am I high.’ They aren’t high, they do not know what high is. They are stoned.

If I could find real true landrace Dalat and Colombian Gold and Panama Red and Acapulco Gold seeds I would keep mother plants and grow clones and never waste another penny on the strains of today and I would be happier than a duck in orange sauce.

People like you do not have the slightest clue about what you missed out on, but you like to talk like you do.

Only people like myself who have smoked pot for around 41 years actually know and that is because we have been around much longer and experienced things sometimes decades before people who call 60’s and 70’s landrace stains schwag were nothing more than a gleam in the eye of two strangers at a Guns & Roses concert.

Something else that you said that is wrong is that the very same strains people like myself smoked in the 60’s and 70’s can be found today for $40.00 to $50.00 per ounce.

You cannot find such things today. Professional breeders search remote areas of different countries desperately trying to find the pure old genetics so they can use them to breed with and also to market pure strains again and they cannot find some of the strains of the 60’s and 70’s and you actually think it is out on the streets selling for $40.00 to $50.00?

Some little clown shoe might be selling schwag and calling it by a name of a 60’s or 70’s landrace sativa but what they are selling is not a true 60’s or 70’s landrace sativa.

i didnt compare software making with growing weed. its got nothing in common. imagine what would happen if there was a HUGE company that grew lots of weed to sell at the national or international level. it could become expensive to buy, and knowing that large corporations like to do everything as cheaply as possible the quality could be diminished heavily. just compare a marlboro with a real cigarrete or a phillies cigar with a cuban

Of course that term had not been invented yet but what it means is not what Colombian Gold or any of the other true landrace sativa of the era were considered to be.

True Colombian Gold, along with the other landrace strains of the era, are connoisseur strains.

One that I hadn’t previously mentions but should be included is Malawi Gold. Arjan from Green House Seeds scoured Africa searching for pure unsullied Malawi Gold.

Why would Green House Seeds go to the effort and expense if Arjan did not already know that he was searching for pure gold, for a Holy Grail that no one has?

right now we are only about 300% of what we were paying in the mid 70's but just last year we were closer to 600%-800% of what it was back then. Its really not that much of a difference actually..

edit:sorry my pretty little chart turned into a cluster fuck up there, its gas prices from 1976-2009. When I started driving in the 90's it was about .90-1.00 in my area

Weed not a difficult thing to grow at all. The pricing does not reflect this however, but like all black market produce, the profit margins are skewed. Legalization will change all of that, and that is good news for the consumers. It will also shake out the marginal producers and let folks with actual business savvy take over.

By the way, i used oil simply again for dramatic effect. Of course oil/gas prices also reflect extreme taxation and weed does not. So whack a 33% tax on weed and you might have a bit more sympathy the next time you fill up your vehicle.
