Mine are self aware. My little dog is aware of what belongs to him. He doesn't want a cat walking past his bowl. He is aware that he exists and he's aware that the one particular bowl belongs to him. He's also aware that the food in the bowl is his too. He'll sit there all day long with a few bites left in the bowl just waiting for a cat to stroll past so he can attack.

Wow if you substitute the word man for dog, and gun for bowl, deer for cat, you've got the story of my next door neighbors life.

Substitute guy for dog, fishing pole for bowl and fish for cat and you've got the life story of the dude who lives down the street from me.

As soon as he saw the door open instead of the leash in my hand he stopped, and his head dropped and he stared at the floor for a moment and then heaved a big sigh and went back into the living room. He didn't get what he wanted so he decided to not participate at all.

The feeling of pain doesn't prove anything. It is merely a reaction of nerve cells to a stimulus.

Though I think the problem is that you are using Sentience in a way that is different from how I am using it.

I see, I mean sapience, as opposed to sentience (which is the common usage in SF).

Animals are not sapient and thus should not be granted the same rights as humans.
