I know for a fact that all of the MS mail servers we replaced in 1999 would have started fucking up the dates on 1/1/00.

Perhaps people have forgotten the unseen army that keep the world turning back then.

are they like the seen army's of today that are "keeping us safe"?

as far as i'm concerned it was cash based fear mongering. my folks went out buying up crap loads of suddenly readily avaiable gas fires, gas stoves, lights, water storage stuff, powdered foods etc etc.

all a load of tripe :)

dire predictions such as till systems not functioning propperly etc?

or dire predictions such as nuclear missiles launching themselves on the homeland and such yeah?

(as in genuinely what were all these dire predictions that got fixed via computer re-programming?)

Every computer system on Earth that needed to know it really was the year 2000.

There are many Y2K failures that no one happened to catch for a bit, and so were not worth reporting to the boss.

is that then to say that every single computer system that didn't know it really was the year 2000, just stopped working? or just couldn't work out the date.

yet again with the lack of exacmples though

If you are saying the IT people are so smart they make the world go around, didn't they know that the date would change to 2000 some day while they were designing these systems prior to this happening.. PEACE

From what I understand, the truncation of the four digit year to two digits was a cost saving measure in the beginning with no real plan for those without vision to account for the uncontrolled growth of PCs.

would 2 characters worth of spacing on a date really make a difference in costs? Bologny. This was just something rendered by the public as "worth doing". wtf else would we have done for the new year? that's what i think. I do not believe.

Long ago, those two characters were worth a lot of money.

IT's just that everyone thought somebody else was responsible for fixing the problem.

Do you not believe IT was a fear tactic, Mr. Pnuggle?

lol, i'll have some proof behind that one as well.

just remember that the government can and will make ANYTHING cost a lot :D the UK olympics logo anyone? LMAO

only 28% of american schools updated their shit, took precautions, you know what happened to the other 72%? pretty much nothing, the 1.5 million small businesses that undertook no precautions or changes. On 3 January 2000 (the first weekday of the year) the Small Business Administration received an estimated 40 calls from businesses with computer problems, similar to the average. None of the problems were critical.

Did all of the failures that displayed proudly in testing magically not occur?
Are you claiming one or a ganjajillion miracles occurred?
The point is a massive undertaking occurred where lots of stuff quickly was replaced in time.

We find IT facinating that nearly no one comprehends what a large EMP can do to the zombie gods.

and my point was that while there were certainly places and things which were sorted, a HELL of a lot of countries instututions businesses etc etc that did absolutely nothing and were effected in absolutely no way

Perhaps very true indeed, although I learned long ago to never believe never.

The desktop level updates occurred for the masses when massive undertakings within Microsoft began pushing software updates to fix all the problems.

On a very related note, did you ever wonder why long ago Microsoft gave away free email?
