A Thread About REP+

Hi RIU!

I am going to start by saying, I'm not asking for it..

I was reading my recent rep comments, and noticed out of the last 10 only 2 left a name...
so I wanted to throw this out to people to see what the general thought is...

I am posting this in newbie forum so.. if you have been here a long time and know how to use the system.. I'm not posting this for your benefit.. obviously:bigjoint:

I'm here to learn. I'm also here to help. If I ask a ? and get a good response, meaning informed and valid.. I will give you a rep point.

leaving Rep
On the post you think is helpful (or funny, or whatever you think is rep-worthy) you see at the top right you see the post #, a "scale" icon, and a warning sign icon.

the scale icon is what you click on to add rep.

Once you click on the add rep icon, it takes you to a page to add to that person's reputation. and a blank comment line.

Let's say k9420 answers my ? I type something like "thanks for the help - cowell". -( make sure to leave your name so that people you help see your name.. may even rep you back, or add to their friends list so that you have someone to pm those really easy ?'s that you just need someone to verify for you.. and don't want to ask in an open forum;-) )

now.. k9420 see's that I appreciated his help.. and he may be more inclined to help if he see's me asking another ?

You will learn that the green rep bar is helpful in determining the reliability of the information source.

If I make a post that has useful information, and get a few people give me input through the rep system, I like to know if I help someone -who I did actually help.

I also use the rep someone as a gauge for how reliable someone's information is. I mean I don't have alot of rep, I'm no RUI or FDD, Roseman.. there's too many to mention.. but if I ask a ? and get one of those guys help.. I accept it as the answer to what I was needing to know...

I guess the point I'm trying to make is.. if you leave Rep for someone cause you think the comment is funny, or helpful or whatever your reason for giving it.. leave your name and comment, and although rep is a good indication as to the reliability of the information always double check facts out for yourself..

pls do NOT rep me for this post!!!

That's not why I brought it up, I brought it up only to discuss it.

:leaf:

edit.. to save on reading.. here's a link posted on page 4 by Dew-B thank you.. all the info you could want!

i agree with the leaving your name in the rep comment section.. its kinda a bummer to not know whom you had helped out or whatever it was that got you the rep in the first place.. i just think its a nice courtesy to leave your name, and this way if you wanna return the favor, you know who to return it to..

exactly my point! I just haven't been out in a bit.. and there's a new crowd with only a few familiar names around...so i don't know if it's something guys think about..as I had 8/10 with no name to go with it.
thanks for backing it up too...

Great thread. I must admit I've never left my name with +reps.. I will now :D

..I'm not allowed to rep you, cowell? Too Bad, your thread has changed how I conduct myself on this site and it at least deserves some rep.. +REP!

Well,
glad I read this as I'm new here, and just today sent 2 people a positive rep but didn't leave a name - I guess I figured the system would let them know. But I have a question. I saw on a post today that someone said someone else left them a rep of -10?? I didn't see any place where you could assign a value to the rep - or did they just write that in the comment line??

Anyways - thanks (old time smoker)

as far as I'm aware the only people that can leave neg feedback is an elite (paid a donation to the site for it's upkeep, so get special perks) member.. so unless the guy was posting nonsense in an elite member's thread enough to make them envoke the power of veto on your rep.. it could just be a comment.

Also to point out on the rep system...
if you have under 100 posts.. your rep doesn't count towards someone's rep total. So for example, you just joined.. you give me rep for a post, I'll see your rep bump, and comment.. but it doesn't increase my rep... this is a great feature in my opinion.. saves from a guy signing up on new accounts to give himself fake rep.. takes a bit of effort to make 100 posts to give yourself one rep point every month.. or just post good info and get them for helping someone out?

So you only get one rep point to give a month? Or does it scale up like 400 posts 4 reps a month?

Good point on droppin the names I never do that haha...till now ^^

Rep away if you want.. lol.. I just want it to be known I didn't start this thread to get rep..

just I personally like getting rep for helping someone.. or making them laugh on a post or whatever your reason for adding to a person's online respectability... and I like to check out their threads.. maybe help more if I can.. and I thought it worth mentioning to leave a comment and name when that many people didn't do it on mine..

Cowell.....I will honor your wish to not be repped for this thread, but I will rep you somewhere down the road whether you like it or not ;-). I've given some thought to this issue and you are right on. I didn't know about rep when I joined this forum. I learned a great deal from the RIU titans.....Uncle Ben, fdd, potroast, Roseman, etc. I've since gone back and tried to rectify that situation.

This should be a sticky in newbie central.

Yes, but without a name you don't know who in the thread repped you.
Sign your rep.

no you can give as many as you want out just not to the same person with in a specific amountof time.

and if you have 100 less post and you give a possitive feedback to someone, it wont count to there rep cuz your too NEW.

He was saying this prevent people from making new accounts and plus repping them selves, if they really want to do that they will have to make 100 accounts LOLOL

I've pretty much always put my name at the end of reps, and why.
Sometimes you even get a rep back, which is always a great surprise.

Actually it's the amount of rep you personally have that relates to what you give. Post count is irrelevant.

For every 100 rep points you have you will pass on 1 point in rep.:bigjoint:

Yea that's how I interpreted it but let's see if it's true. I have like 42 rep points If I rep you you shouldn't get an increase in your total sum. So let's test it out...

...Did your sum increase?
