Walmart. What Do You Think?

Alot has been said about Walmart. Both good and bad. I know of some conservative friends who say they destroyed their rural town.

Others say they are helping us through the recession. Others still say they are the only ones who will hire uneducated "retards" and they should be lucky to have any job at all.

There are opinions all over the place. What do you think? :confused::confused::confused:

As long as people have a choice whether or not to shop there, it's not my business what they do. Often my preference is to support the local hardware store or people that sell food products at farmers markets. But Walmart is hard to beat on prices, to condemn them for running an efficient business would be anti free market. If you don't like them...don't shop there. Besides they are great place to buy um certain agricultural products.

Its funny, people are always against Walmart, but the revenue that walmart brings to a city is phenominal.

AND, when your there shopping you will always run into the people who rallied HARD against it. hypocrits?

Walmart has been the whipping boy for the Progressives and the unions they represent. If and when Walmart employees vote for union representation, all of the vile bullshit we've been hearing about Walmart will stop.

walmart's not so bad. like these guys ^ have said if you don't like it don't shop there...obviously that's going to be difficult if all the other stores in your area have closed down but it's unlikely that the presence of a walmart or similar superstore is the single solitary contributing factor to a smaller business going under.

that said, when i've got the extra cash to spend i prefer to shop in the local stores. i think they have better product than supermarkets etc a lot of the time, albeit a smaller range.

i also used to work in a walmart-owned store here in the UK (no i'm not a retard or old person) and they really do take care of their staff. there are plenty daft rules but there's a lot more in the way of benefits than the average company gives its workers.

I used to work at a new Walmart that came into town about 20 years ago. That was when walmart was pushing the "American Made" products and using that slogan in their commercials. At that time, yes almost everything was from an American producer. Now you are hard pressed to find anything made in the USA at walmart these days.
I even remember them (when the discover card was new) that they would never accept that card because they gave them to too many people who should not have a credit card and were also slow in transferring payments.

I am not going to take a stand for or against them, but they did switch to almost completely overseas made products. Other smaller businesses that closed due to them I could say was their fault, but it is also the nature of business. You either compete or you fail.

My bitch with them was they came into town selling the "buy American" pitch and as soon as they got established, they went to the foreign products.

I simply avoid walmart at all times if possible. In my area, the rubbernecking rednecks crashing their way through you not looking where they are going.... augh, it is ridiculous. I try to buy local mostly, but it is frustrating when I cannot find what I am looking for. Still, I like it better knowing my money is actually going into my community, being spent HERE, and thus making it a better place to live, little bit at a time. Spending money at a big warehouse simply for convenience means you are supporting a system that delivers us cheap, inferior products made at the lowest price by nearly slave labor in china instead of quality made in teh USA parts. It wicks away jobs, and sends our money flowing out of the country. All we are left with is a consumer, service based society deprived of social life sitting behind computer screens and cell phones, only stopping to look up and perform the necessary job duties with no inkling of emotion whatsoever. A society enslaved to a nosediving currency with no guarantee in the future except death and taxes. But thats just my opinion. Best find ye Jesus! ;)

I am all for Walmart.

It really comes down to how you look at the situation. The people that are losing their businesses that are in the area of walmart are doing so because they charge more for the same products and/or they are a pain in the ass because you cannot find everything that they wish to purchase.

But if you look at the entire amount of money that the community that shops there saves over the course of a year, the benefit the people get from saving money outweighs that business that just tanked.

-The city is gaining money from the extra taxes.
-The workers spend their paychecks in the areas they live so that money stays local.
-The people buying the goods have extra funds they can turn and use in the local economy.

And for the businesses that go under even though it can be devastating to lose your business, they are able to restart as something that is needed by the community that is lacking, meaning the resources are being moved to a more efficient use instead of a less efficient retail store.

Like say instead of a catch all local shop they can become a local hydroponics store, something that would compliment what walmart offers while still differentiating from them with a higher quality product.

I still like to rib the people that were totally against walmart when i find them in there shopping. funny to see the hypocrital masses being exactly what they are. against it until it benefits them. then they love it.

I used to be kinda anti Walmart, mostly due to the bad press they have on employee rights etc.

I once heard that if they raised prices 1/2% on the average, they could increase everyone's pay by $1 per hour and provide basic health insurance. I have never seriously researched that claim, so I do not know. It does sorta sound like an urban myth though.

I shop at Walmart all the time. Their prices are usually the best. The other thing is the convience. Basically, almost everything you could possibly need is at one store.

I won't buy "fresh" meat there though. Don't like the quality and almost all of it is processed with tenderisers, solutions, enhancers, etc. Yuk.

So I hold my head up high and shop! Would be nice if they could treat employees a tad bit better. :weed:

People who have netflix should watch the documentary, Walmart: The high cost of low prices. Its a very revealing film that has a great ending. Walmart is a disease though. Most people aren't ethical shoppers and could care less where thier products come from as stated in these other posts. Who cares right as long as you get what you want for a low price. Just like thier slogan, save money, live better, thats all the masses need to think about. I would rather be an aware and concious shopper. I dont want any of my money going to the waltons. They obviously look at the people on the bottom as filthy animals.

Well the missus works for wally world in canada and the whole story is alot better than the crap you hear... she gets good retail wage, profit sharing, bonuses and health and dental paid for... discount shopping card really comes in handy....

Cream of Wheat and Malt-O-Meal is almost 5 bucks at the market. Target has a larger size fot $3.89. WalMart is the same.

Price honey at Target and WalMart. About half of a regular market.

WalMart offers generic prescription drugs for 4 bucks, same with Target.

Both WalMart and Target are a boon to poor people, seniors, smart shoppers and pot growers.

Damn, he really did just lay it out.

It would just freak me out to buy perishable foods there, or any other long term purchase(furniture, tv, oven), but other than that...... GGGGGGGGGGOOOOOOOO Walmart!

Interesting. I think that very few empolyees get these benfits in the US. I am guessing that they have certain standards they must meet in Canada as a government requirement? Of course, we are much more traditional capitalists in our country.

I guess as you would expect they develop a business model that suits them best for whatever country they are in. The U.S. being less "socialist" I would guess imposes much less in the way of restrictions.

Walmart has huge economies of scale. Do we or should we really care about anything at all?
