What's Wrong With Begging?

This one's going to get all kinds of responses, I can already tell!

I'm just trying to present a counter argument for this question to give the rest of you something to work with, so here it is..

What's wrong with a person begging for something? If there are people willing to give it to them on their own accord, is it correct to say that them begging for it is "wrong"?

Is it more wrong for someone who doesn't need something than it is for someone begging who does?

Do you ever give money or food to people who beg in your daily life? Do you think this has any impact on their future, the decisions they make, etc? Or are you simply helping someone out in a moment of need? Similar to the welfare system, does giving them things prevent them from providing for themselves in any way, regardless of how small or large?

You dont ask you dont get...

When it comes to homeless people my girlfriend goes to a pastry shop buys then some food and give it them, They love it - unless they were hoping for a few quid for some heroin.. then oh well.

I won't give them cash. I will go to mcdonalds and by them a 2 hamburgers and if they take it then they need it but if they don't then they want the money for cocaine.

if by begging you just mean those ones that hang out on the street with their little paper cup or cap waiting for loose change then nah, nothing wrong with that at all.

pushy ones like this annoy me

but luckily i don't live in ancient rome.

i give a bit to beggars if i've got it to give. sandwiches, crisps, cigarettes, or just spare change. if they want to spend it on booze or drugs that's their choice not mine.

I don't think there's anything wrong with begging per se. There are a lot of people who do it but don't really need to. We have a lot of drunks and drug addicts who do it around me so they don't get shit from me but they're still at it so somebody's coming off of some cheddar. If you really need food, clothes and shelter there isn't a need because you can go to any number of missions, food pantries and other charities who will gladly help you out without question. :bigjoint:

Yeah that's the issue I have... I'll gladly give to a person in need if I have it to give, but I don't want to be buying the guys next fix.. and there's no way to know unless you give food or clothes or whatever instead of money, and how often do you have any of that to spare? Like only if they catch you walking back into the office after lunch or something...

Are these charities really that giving and easy to get to? I've seen countless homeless people all over the city around here, why don't they go there? They just haven't heard about em? I've never heard about em, but I've never done any research into them. And likely they're religious institutions trying to push Christianity or some other agenda... idk, it's hard to trust people these days. I think there's a lot more people in poverty than there are people willing to give to charity.

A few years ago there were these 2 guys who voluntarily became homeless in NYC. They were writing a book or something. Anyways, there was an interview on NPR and these guys were saying that any homeless person who claims they are hungry is lying. They said there were so many soup kitchens and missions around (which all homeless people learn about quickly) who give out food, shelter, and clothing with no strings. Perhaps some places make you listen to a sermon or something in order to get your food but who cares? It's a small price to pay in exhcange for a handout wouldn't you say? :joint:

I gave money to a guy once because he was honest enough to say it was for beer. Any other time I do what most do, walk real fast and act like I don't hear them.
