so how would i make a simple recirulating shallow dwc? i searched but couldent find anything.
also you dont have problems with plants roots tangling together?
i made a rubber maid setup for 2 plants with 3 8"airstones being run by 3 double air pumps and 1 single pump. root growth was crazy so i separated it with plexi-glass.

spider mites are like the insurgence of the grow room.clones, mtf, 10 days veg from root....
spider mites will be a problem. as always.

heh, i guess i could say that all my breeding work is to produce a strain that will go from seed to harvest with no treatment against mites, though being infested since the beginning.
believe it or not, i've been slacking big time with teh neem, and letting them do what they do. i've noticed they'll colonize, and if you isolate the colony, they're pretty much content to stay where they are....
however, lots and lots of ugly leaves (which of course does hurt yield) and a web here or there, but i've brought two to harvest with no mite treatment....
others are getting neemed still, with little possitive outcome

think of a forest; lush growth of nothing but roots tangled up in humus.....
this is in principle the same thing, but they humus is water.
the way this system works is recirculation by overflow. a pump pumps water into the containers from the res, and water returns through an overflow tube on teh other side. each container holds three air stones which are pushing a massive 134gph of air each.
because this is dwc, and roots are submerged, the roots can be a mat, and will still not be fighting for nutrients, as they are readily available to all. if you look at my "feet wet" thread, you'll see how well three did together, roots becoming one massive rootball. the six site also became a mat of roots, the container was about 2/3 full of them!
also, in theory this isn't several plant's roots tangling, it's one plant spread across the table (clones). if roots can sense another plant's presense (roots) then it should see another clone's roots as it's own....

I think it's similar to my spider dwc design (correct me if i'm wrong kp) basically there's an external res that pumps water up into a tray that fills until it hits the over flow drain. the pump just keeps pumping.

lol, the difference is i set all of mine up with a drain valve on a low tube, so the entire container can be flushed to the res quickly. each container is set up this way, and the infeed hooks in series, so it's an add/drop a container type system. i could do one as easily as 8

lolwell i designed mine with the idea of being able to change out pots with out interrupting the system. just turn off the valve and unplug.i was stoned when i thought of it.
this could be a one site monster dwc, a two site huge plant dwc, a three site very big plant dwc, a 6 big plant dwc, a large plant sog, or a full blown small clone sog.... and you can add drop containers.
maybe one day i'll have the money to market this system

so as i see it there are 3 basic problems to overcome for outdoor hydro grows.
-res temp
-root mass
-contamination
when the temps are cold in the spring and fall the roots in a dwc would die pretty quickly so the only way to possibly get around this is a buried or partially buried res accompanied with a water heater. I think it goes without saying that there will need to be an auxiliary external res.
root mass for plants that are comparable to fdd's will be.....well massive. i guess the only way to solve this is to have a large main res to begin with. which would be a huge was of water while the plants are small so a few transplants might be necessary.
the last big problem is contamination. because it's a water source lots of bugs and small critters are going to want to get at it. the res has to be tightly sealed. dead bugs and critter crap would be really bad because there won't be any good bacteria to break that ammonia down into useful compounds.
those are the ones i can think of right now. i'm sure there's more. good luck you have my support

this makes me think about someones quote that said "some people collect rocks others collect plants. but Kp collects plants." this makes e always remember it.progress report....
by the way i just wanted to make sure this is about what the recirculating dwc/swc would look like. Do i have the right principal? im going to make one of these for myself using 5 gallon buckets and a flexible rubber line.
anyone see a problem with garden hose being used for a water line?
