Police “Welfare Check” Leaves Woman Dead

Police in Franklin Township, New Jersey recently announced an innovative program “designed to improve the safety of senior citizens,” reported WCBS-TV.
Through “Operation Blue Angel,” elderly residents would leave a key to their front doors in a lockbox accessible by a combination known to police.

Police doing “safety checks” of the homes would knock on the door and, if nobody responds, would use the keys to enter.

What could possibly go wrong? What does anybody have to fear from angelic armed strangers sent to check on their “welfare”?

One possible problem is demonstrated by the shooting death of a 47-year-old Prairie Village, Kansas woman this morning (March 31).

Police were sent to her apartment to conduct a “welfare check.” For some reason, the woman didn’t want to be “helped” by the friendly state functionaries with guns.

Oh, but we insist, replied the “Blue Angels,” as they summoned their khaki-clad comrades from the Tactical Squad. Eventually, because of “threats” she supposedly made against the stormtroopers, the police (in the words of a local TV reporter) “were forced to shoot her.”

sounds voluntary to me.

"Since the program started a week ago, 20 seniors and people with medical conditions have signed up. It provides peace of mind for their children."

they are common place throughout old peoples homes in england, except the police don't have the number, it's usually put their by a family member so that they can get in or out, if the person is particularly disabled then the code is given to companies that deal with non mobile elderly so that they can deliver food and whatever else the person may need. People can only work for these jobs if they have a full police back ground check.

FDD is incorrect

the word voluntary or optional does not appear in the article

plus it says the woman did NOT want to comply, and did not want to VOLUNTARILY let them in

they forced their way in, she tried to protect her home from invaders, they killed her, end of story

from your own link, .... http://wcbstv.com/local/senior.safety.nj.2.1587632.html

"Operation Blue Angel is funded completely by money seized during drug busts. While the program is intended for people with medical conditions or those 55 or older, anyone can sign up."

or this one, ...

"Since the program started a week ago, 20 seniors and people with medical conditions have signed up. It provides peace of mind for their children."

try again.

If this is true, there needs to be some prosecution involved.

If its voluntary to accept the service, then its just as voluntary to dismiss them when you see fit also. Apparently "Signing up" for this service means random checks and searches of your home by armed men who won't put up with "no" for an answer.

I bet after today those 20 people that had signed up, all withdraw their consent and their keys.

"Police said that at just before 7 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 4300 block of West 93rd Terrace in the Kenilworth apartment complex to check on the welfare of a 47-year-old woman. Investigators said the subject had made suicidal and threatening comments to other law enforcement agencies on Wednesday morning."

"Officials said neighbors called police on Tuesday night after the woman verbally assaulted them."

where's my dollar? :bigjoint:

she must have signed up because she was crazy.

google is your friend. keeps one from looking silly, ... http://www.fox4kc.com/wdaf-officer-involved-shooting-033110,0,5772961.story

"'Somebody please kill me,'" Carson said she said. "When she was out this morning when she was yelling outside, she was yelling, 'Somebody please kill me.'"

A police crisis intervention team (CIT) said they talked to the woman through her locked door for two and a half hours, but she wouldn't let them inside.

wait, ..... what?!? key from WHO??????

"Once we had a key from the apartment complex, when they got in, she was armed.," Capt. Schwartzkopf said. "They tried to use what I would describe as less lethal options, that was not working and basically officers had to use deadly force."

thread FAIL.

I can't see why they didn't just mace, taze, use "non lethal" rounds, tear gas or set the dogs on her. She was obviously fucked in the head (maybe "that" time of the month) and not in control of her actions. If a police officer couldn't disarm a 47 year old woman he shouldn't be a police officer. He could have just worn a stab proof vest, walked in there and knocked the bitch out.

when met with deadly force they are trained to respond with the same. they aim for center mass, not feet. it's just the way it is.

this may have been wrong. the cop may be out of line. but i don't think they were "blood thirsty", and this had NOTHING to do with operation blue angel.
